Dual nationals to be denied entry to UK from 25 February unless they have British passport New border controls require ‘certificate of entitlement’ to attach to second nationality passport that costs £589

I’m a dual citizen 🇬🇧&🇳🇿. I have both passports - seems obvious and sensible to me

UK rules changing. @theguardian.com mentions x4 in article below that ‘certificate of entitlement’ costs £589

They don’t mention the far cheaper option of renewing/getting a full UK passport for £94.50

At any restaurant in the UK your waiter legally has to ask everyone at the table if they have allergies or dietary restrictions. Thats been in place since 2021

It’s not impossible to be unable to consume sweetener, but extremely rare. There are many alternative drinks for those rare few

There are still highly sugary drinks with no sweetener, they just cost a more due to the tax

You can also *and this is the option I recommend* drink something that natually contains less sugar. There are plenty of choices. Plenty of people enjoy soda, nobody NEEDS full sugar carbonated drinks

Good thing you’ve found out about it.

A trick I use with foods is to look at the ingredients list on the packaging. That is the designated place where all the ingredients and components are listed. I’m pretty sure the USA has that system too.

I’m not sure where ‘here’ is for you

UK soft drinks are branded diet or zero (depending on the brand) if they are entirely sugar free

The ‘original’ versions of those drinks have slightly less sugar here than in some other countries. The slightly reduced sugar is made up for with added sweetener

So not primarily sweetened with sweeteners but often reformulated to have a bit less sugar. Or more expensive and pitched as a luxury option

2018. Fancy name is the Soft Drinks Industry Levy.

Yes. The UK has a tax on drinks with more than 8g sugar per 100mls. Some people notice but most people can’t taste much of a difference

From a health perspective, it’s not good to be drinking enormous quantities of sugar. There is lots of evidence for this.

I haven’t really see any magic from Polanski. He’s enthusiastic and communicates well, but his policies don’t have much depth or development. All feels a bit student union.

I’d love it if he grows into the role and starts cracking out detailed, thought out, punchy progressive policies

I don’t think anyone is claiming this is a substitute for equitable distribution of income/wealth, universal basic services, curbs on profiteering.

You are allowed to be positive if you see something good and sensible happening.

Both the Tory parties are the same.

The more intermingling happens, the clearer it is that the Conservative Tories share the extremist views of Farage, and the Reform Tories are basically just the Liz Truss government rebranded.

I grew up in Dumfries & Galloway, highly reccommend it. Would be a great area to move to with a family. Rural and outdoor living but also under 90mins drive to Glasgow/ 2hours to Edinburgh

Got a sandwich today from Britains iconic bakery chain:

Greggs lady “did you ken there’s a Greggs Diet now?”

Me “oh aye? Does it work?”

Greggs lady “I’d have tae say No. Not if you’re wanting tae lose weight”

‘Specialist of your choice’ is an odd criteria for hospital healthcare. People often don’t know which exactly which spcialist they need. A well run public system can triage anyone to the right place equitably

Do you expect to pick your own pilot when you fly? (To be fair, @mcuban.bsky.social might)

The patient did not consent to receive blood products, but did agreed to abide by the courts decision

Whilst not consent, this seem a form of agreement. Reduced agency but she is perhaps insulated from moral judgement if blood administered

These cases are often acrimonious, but this one seems not

Government waters down farm inheritance tax plan The government has now said it will lift the intended threshold from £1m to £2.5m.

Are you rich & don’t like paying taxes? Buy land!!

Keir Starmer has decided to only charge inheritance tax to agricultural landowners on estates over £2.5million

However if your only asset is a family home, you start paying inheritance tax at £325,000

What’s the point of this labour government?

These retirement ambitions may change in the UK.

Post-2012 medical students frequently graduate with UK£100,000 student debt, which continues to compound in the early decade of career due to high interest rates exceeding payments. For many now in 30s, retirement in 50s is probably implausible.

Also worth saying: the plural of octopus is ‘octopodes’ not ‘octopuses’ 🐙🐙

It comes to my attention that Americans don’t use the word ‘tortoise’ & call #tortoises (ie the slow moving guys who sleep all winter) #turtles (ie the ocean dwelling dudes) and sometimes call them ‘land turtles’ 🐢

All tortoises are turtles. But not all turtles are tortoises. Tortoises are real

The reality is the UK is not as wealthy in 2025 as we all hoped it would be. It’s hard.

To wrap older adults in cotton wool would place a crushing burden on those currently in their 50s, 40s & 30s, & diminish the life chances of our children. We can’t always prioritise the old over the future.

You’re right, and his cases would not be accepted as case report in peer reviewed journals. Context is he was writing illustrative vignettes for general interest readers.

His writing was good enough to give me a ‘phase’ of wanting to be a neurologist, something I thankfully grew out of…

I quite strongly disagree @hankgreen.bsky.social

not being dramatic, but in this late stage of capitalism you face a terrible and momentous choice, like Robert Oppenheimer or Spider-Man.

A man could add coffee to his tea, but have you stopped to consider if you should?

Merkel Cell Carcinoma.

Wide Lesion Excision +/- adjuvant radiotherapy, and then consider the value of #STAMP trial and upcoming #IMAT trial as to if there is a role for adjuvant IO vs surveillance. #MCC
