I once spent months searching for something that would connect two concepts and finally found it laid out very clearly in a book I wrote :-/

#PlatformExtractivism is available for 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 (out Oct 20)!

Thrilled to share what @geoplace.bsky.social has to say about the book: "A grounded and uncompromising account of the infrastructures and workers that sustain AI."

Mountain home near Aspen, built for monks who labored in silence, sold to Palantir CEO for $120M The $120 million sale of the 3,700-acre St. Benedict’s Monastery in Old Snowmass was one of the largest residential sales in state history

Luckily for him, he recently bought his very own Aspen monastery to hide out in.

You don’t want to know there’s an unfinished article with an analysis of what it says about artificial intelligence that Clippy can’t help you poop.

Some days you wake up, start a book, then it’s six hours later and you’ve binge read a whole novel.

Epic road trip done:

10 days. 2600 miles, mostly on backroads. 16 states. Camped in 7 we hadn’t before (TX, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, DE). We’ve now camped in 35 states since getting our campervan in 2020.

Main thing I learned on this trip: Alabama and South Carolina are very beautiful.

Arrived at campsite in state 32: Alabama. Impressed at how pretty the drive across the state has been and now here we are at the southern tip of the Appalachian mountains.

How far south did it turn into culture shock for you?

Driving the US on backroads is always eye opening. So much destitution. So many small swanky towns, most with a rural health center anchor. Here and there a horse region. Red state male gas station managers with red nail polish. Strip malls and Dollar Generals. So much beautiful land everywhere.

In an exceedingly quiet dispersed site in a National Forest for state 31, Mississippi. With shock discovered a gas station with my mother’s extremely unusual maiden name nearby.

We got a campervan in 2020. Last night we camped in our 30th state! Greetings from Louisiana.

I hear people use the word “embarrassed” to describe how Americans must feel these days, but I’m going with “mortified and bone-crushingly ashamed with a dash of existential terror.”

Coincidentally second book in a row I’ve read featuring a character called The Reader. (“If On A Winter’s Night A Traveler” was the other.) Getting mighty meta in this reading list.

Just finished Daryl Gregory’s “When We Were Real.” I love his writing, always a perfect blend of fun and quirky, deep and wise.

I know who gets fired is misogynistic as all get out and that whoever comes next will be just as bad or worse but it is still good to see another one sent packing.

One time I was at a yacht party in Cannes with Feargal Sharkey and someone offered to introduce us but I wasn’t willing to risk my love of the Undertones.

One sign you’ve chosen the right neighborhood is when they’ve organized a carpool to the protest.
