I did notice a *2nd order* correlation (i.e. the residual fluctuations after the recession signals were removed) between JOLTS job openings and the S&P 500 but the apparent lags were strange.

It’s telling you don’t need the context of the image to know the original story was about some right winger being invited to speak.

Oh how much work “shocked” is doing, too! Existence of right wing views—not shocking these days. Should just say “be ready to be offended”—which is just asshole-coded.

that's a monty python reference and iowa pork is a big deal

but really—what form does this alienation take? are people not going to vote against fascism because i made a joke? that's pretty self-involved.

i seriously doubt someone genuinely about to fight fascism would stop because of a joke.

My extended family consists of white people from rural Illinois and I grew up in a deep red county in Texas. Collectively we're not good people.

A good start is simply not to publicly push back against attempts to shame people into realizing what evil they've done.

I extend this to all Americans, frankly. I do not push back on anyone calling us stupid or evil. Collectively, we are. And we need to experience that shame.

There is a certain amount of tone deafness in saying "there are good people there" when the state voted overwhelmingly to put people in charge that are murdering our fellow citizens and trying to eliminate us or our families from existence. There were probably good people in Nazi Germany, too.

Today's book rec: "takes elements of familiar story lines -- a deal with the Devil, aliens living among us, and the all-too-real struggles of a young trans woman -- and combines them into something completely new, jarring, unexpected and beautiful." I don’t use it partially from principle but also my skills have decayed so much from just leading projects more than coding them that I’m afraid I’d completely lose any proficiency I have left.

See the times I have to write something as *opportunities* to prevent skill decay!

anyway there’s a place for you if you like the robes and the ceremonies but don’t like the pope that got kicked off by an unhealthy, misogynist old man ruling as a tyrant king and it’s called the church of england

It’s important because if you use whom when you should use who, you come across as both pretentious and stupid. If you use who when you should use whom, almost everyone will give it a pass.
