this reminds me, i don't think SCOTUS should be allowed to choose their own clerks. standardize the hiring schedule, put the applications in a pool, blind reads (perhaps by a panel of former clerks) and random assignments.

Screenshotted excerpt from linked article reading as follows: "In public, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. has cultivated a reputation for care and caution. The papers reveal a different side of him. At a critical moment for the country and the court, the papers show, he acted as a bulldozer in pushing to stop Mr. Obama’s plan to address the global climate crisis. When colleagues warned the chief justice that he was proposing an unprecedented move, he was dismissive. “I recognize that the posture of this stay request is not typical,” he wrote. But he argued that the Obama plan, which aimed to regulate coal-fired plants, was “the most expensive regulation ever imposed on the power sector,” and too big, costly and consequential for the court not to act immediately."

New York Times got receipts on John Roberts being like, 'I know this isn't how anything works, but a Democratic president is about to implement a policy!!'

Sara David rallies the crowd flanked by union members
"Workers need your solidarity in the fight of organized money against organized people." @saradavid.bsky.social of @wgaeast.bsky.social. support workers like Sara > unionnow.org #UnionNow
A powerful man sexually pursuing a young woman who works for him is oppressive. It immediately limits and reshapes her future to her detriment, whether she is physically forced into it or not. It’s coercion either way, and that is why it’s so wrong. It’s an abuse of power.
NYC Sunday 2 pm at Terminal 5.
New York is a union town

WGA Statement on CBS News Layoffs Once again, our members have lost their jobs due to the recklessness and greed of their bosses. CBS News Radio is an institution, where generations of the finest journalists in the country spent their careers reporting the news and holding people in power to account. The decision to simply shutter CBS News Radio is indicative of Bari Weiss and David Ellison's inept leadership. The dozens of CBS journalists laid off today have served the American people through their talent and dedication. Given the damage David Ellison has done to CBS News in mere months, the Ellison family must not be permitted to acquire CNN or any other vital news outlets. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues and friends and will fight to protect journalists.
Read the statement from @wgaeast.bsky.social and @wgawest.bsky.social on the layoff of Guild members at CBS News.
We stand in solidarity with our colleagues and friends and will fight to protect journalists.
If Paramount can shell out billions of dollars to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, then they can pay their unionized CBS staff a fair wage.
I stand with the CBS staff who walked out today as they fight these corporate giants for essential protections and fair contracts.
Declaring that no quarter will be given is straightforwardly prohibited under international humanitarian law.
When done to threaten an adversary, the declaration itself amounts to a war crime.

so, next time they are in power, i think democrats should ask themselves real serious questions about whether they want to continue considering bids and accepting contracts from an organization that has made eradicating half the country an explicit political goal
If Jared Polis caves to extortion and pardons an unrepentant insurrectionists, he should be impeached and removed. But everyone involved would probably be better off in Colorado Dems brandished the threat, and Polis backed down. www.offmessage.net/p/impeach-ja...
they lie every single time
it’s always murder, they’re always smearing the victim in order to cover for themselves
DHS statements should be treated, presumptively, as the exact opposite of the truth
not exaggerations, not inaccurate - brazen, total lies
"The proposed deal has attracted a lot of criticism, largely because it sucks. That’s a broad statement, so let me be more specific: It only sucks for every affected industry, the United States, and humanity as a whole."
"We are wrong because we started the war" should be the anchor point for all coverage of what's happening and it's remarkable how quickly that tends to get obscured.

How is it possible that Kristi Noem still has this job. Imagine if you’re a family member or a shipmate of this guardsman.

On Nov. 16, a mental health counselor recorded in Kamilla’s medical records that her mother reported the girl had lost her appetite after being “served food that contained worms.” A week later, the couple said, children were told to gather in the gym for what they believed would be a Thanksgiving celebration. Excitement spread as families saw tables set with turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, they said. The children waited expectantly. But when a parent asked when the celebration would begin, Oksana said, staff told them the holiday meal was for employees, not detainees. The children, she said, watched despondently as the feast was packed away.
On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.
The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.
But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.
there's fierce competition, but this is one of the most stomach-turning things I've read in some time
@wgaeast.bsky.social members at Hearst are asking for a fair contract that includes sustainable wages, AI protections & workplace flexibility. Join us in standing with @hearstunion.bsky.social members by writing Hearst leadership & telling them to agree to a fair contract. wgaea.st/hearst-letter
It really is funny watching AI people talk about AI as intelligence. Like Jim Henson telling everyone on Sesame Street how scared he is of "the thing that lives in the can."
I think it's best for everyone to understand that the unified class project of billionaires right now is to do to white collar workers what globalization and neoliberalism did to blue collar workers.

“Perhaps one of the industries at most risk from the use of artificial intelligence is journalism and as a result, the public's trust and confidence in accurate news reporting. More than 76% of Americans are concerned about AI stealing or reproducing journalism and local news stories, as AI continues to reshape our daily lives and careers across industries. To protect the public's trust in reporting and the news they read everyday and the journalists who do the work, I'm proud to introduce the NY FAIR News Act with Assemblymember Rozic, and I look forward to working with my colleagues in the State Senate to enact common sense guidelines that protect New Yorkers from the unintended consequences of AI." SENATOR PATRICIA FAHY (D—ALBANY) [Logo: New York State Senate]
“At the center of the news industry, New York has a strong interest in preserving journalism and protecting the workers who produce it The NY FAIR News Act promotes journalistic integrity and ensures total AI-disclosure to journalists, workers, and the public alike." ASSEMBLYWOMAN NILY ROZIC (D—NYC) [Logo: New York State Assembly]
“Artificial Intelligence presents a clear and demonstrable threat to the integrity of the news. The NY FAIR News Act recognizes that AI may be used in newsrooms, but rather than let this nascent technology run wild, especially in a critical election year, the bill mandates cooperation between news media companies and the highly skilled human workers they employee to uphold journalistic standards and workplace protections." Introducing The NY FAIR News Act, legislation that establishes clear protections for both journalists, media professionals and the broader public to ensure that the integrity of the news and its workforce are safeguarded against artificial intelligence.

insisting on calling every mass day of protest or one-day boycott a "general strike" is not the move. it's good to see people rallying around the cause, it matters, but if you want to be part of a large-scale labor action that shuts down the gears of capital, start by unionizing your workplace!!!
the fact that this bullshit has even reached the supreme court is completely disqualifying to the entire field of law
the arrest of journalists in minneapolis, including don lemon, is more evidence that the only move the administration knows how to make is to use force, and does not know how to respond when that force is met with defiance and indifference.
yes, there are no real signs of any big change in DHS activity here yet. In Chicago there really was after Bovino left and they basically ended "Midway Blitz" not so here so far.
