Diana has said that the books are Claire telling the story of Jamie. I read early on that STARZ wanted a female POV. So they switched it to Claire. In early episodes, the show writers gave many of book Jamie’s statements to show Claire.

The show is the show and the books are the books. As Diana has stated thousands of times since 2014. Writers do this to maintain jeopardy in the storyline. Quite frankly, both deaths would have been tragic, but I’m glad for the ultimate choice.
