Free school meal rule change to make 500,000 more pupils eligible Charities have broadly welcomed the plans, saying they hope it is a sign of more to come.

Amazing news for struggling families and their children, including the 47% of children living in poverty in the PM's constituency.

This must act as a down payment to further investment in a child poverty strategy which scraps the 2child limit.

Our new data shows that in @leicesterliz.bsky.social's constituency 44% of kids live in poverty.

Liz has the power to change this, she is one of the MPs responsible for developing a strategy to tackle child poverty. To have impact this strategy must include scraping the 2child limit.

New data from @endchildpoverty.bsky.social shows that at least one in four children live in poverty in the vast majority of constituencies (88%) in North West England.

For Manchester Rusholme, the picture is even more bleak – with more than half of all children currently living in poverty.

Today marks an unhappy milestone. The 2-child limit to benefit payments has now been in place for 8 yrs. This limits the money families can get when claiming benefits, if their 3rd + child was born after April 2017.

@teamlabouruk.bsky.social must scrap this and lift 350,000 children out of poverty

Today we joined @cpaguk.bsky.social and @endchildpoverty.bsky.social outside the treasury to mark a miserable milestone.

By this weekend, 30,000 extra children will have been pushed into poverty thanks to the two-child limit since the Labour Government came into power in July 2024.

Over this weekend the policy has now pulled a further 30,000 kids into poverty since @uklabour.bsky.social came to power.

I wish this was an April Fools joke. But it is not.

Children in poverty, and people in receipt of disability benefits are not two separate groups. If the govt wants to reduce the number of children living in poverty they need to ensure that the benefits system is properly funded.

Today we joined @endchildpoverty.bsky.social & @cpaguk.bsky.social in Westminster to put a stop to rising child poverty as it hit 4.5 million, a record high.

We urge the UK Govt to include scrapping the 2-child limit & benefit cap in the Child Poverty Strategy, this would lift 500k out of poverty.

This cannot continue, the government need to act. The quickest and most cost effective way to reduce the number of children living in poverty is to scrap the two-child limit to benefit payments. This needs to happen now.

New figures released by the government today are shocking. Child poverty has reached a new record high with 4.5 million children falling below the poverty line in the year to April 2024. This is an increase of 100,000 from the previous year.

The response from Joseph Howes, the Chair of the End Child Poverty Coalition, which reads; “Today’s Spring Statement will cause further hardship for disabled people, which includes families with children. This government came to power with a commitment to significantly reduce the numbers of children living in poverty. Yet, today’s announcement, combined with the recent proposed cuts to disability payments – will likely pull more families into hardship.
“The government’s planned Child Poverty Strategy, to be published in spring, will now need to mitigate the impact of these cuts to families - before putting in place further measures, to have any chance of addressing the already record high numbers of children in poverty.”

The image also features the Coalition logo, and a placard with the words 'MPs Must End Child Poverty Now.
