We are, at this point, on good terms with the neighbors, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t still actively scared of hammer man next door, and that panic reactivates on a dime roughly once a day.
Which, ok, yeah, I’m really fucking relieved he wasn’t actually seriously injured. My dog is admittedly more dog than I am comfortable with given my chronic health shit, but she was traumatized and abandoned to me and so we’re all doing our fucking best.
He claimed to have lost the tip of his finger, and yelled “do you want to see what’s left” of it when I go to suggest it’s inappropriate to threaten my dog WITH A HAMMER, then later, after we’d managed to de-escalate the conversation revealed that it was skin and that it, and I quote, “grew back.”
BECAUSE OF COURSE HE DID. You can’t stick your fingers in through a fence at a scared dog and be surprised when she defends her home. He’d even said he’d worked with reactive dogs before, so it’s beyond puzzling to me that he expected that to go differently.
To be fair I get why he was upset. She’s a reactive dog, and she’d gotten out a few days prior and so without talking to us, he decided to shoo her back into our yard and stuck his fingers in through the fence while she was still out there to “fix it.”
He got his finger bitten for his trouble.
I never thought “you are not allowed to threaten my dog with a hammer” would be a thing I’d to say out loud to a whole ass adult man.
They were legitimately shocked and angry I objected. I had to point out that it’s terrifying to have a large man you don’t know threatening actionable violence.
It’s been a few months, but I’m still low-key having a panic attack about the time my new neighbor threatened to hit my dog with a hammer, while he was holding a hammer.
