With some trepidation, I'm putting this out into the world:
gershmanlab.com/textbook.html
It's a textbook called Computational Foundations of Cognitive Neuroscience, which I wrote for my class.
My hope is that this will be a living document, continuously improved as I get feedback.

Time to petition Miriam-Webster for “inflappable”.
New Open dataset alert:
🧠 Introducing "Spacetop" – a massive multimodal fMRI dataset that bridges naturalistic and experimental neuroscience!
N = 101 x 6 hours each = 606 functional iso-hours combining movies, pain, faces, theory-of-mind and other cognitive tasks!

Continuing to iterate on Quick Look Previews for NIfTI files. Now works with dark mode on macOS 15 and later. New Makefile to simplify compilation and install: make all && make install. Details on GitHub. #nifti #mri #quicklook #neuroimaging
This will helpfully allow you to view the contents of a NIfTI image when selecting it in the macOS finder and pressing the space-bar.
Releasing a NIfTI Quick Look tool compatible with macOS 15+. This is necessary since Apple significantly changed those frameworks and broke the (legendary?) Gary Zhang's old NIfTI plugin. PRs welcome! Download and build with Xcode: github.com/pmolfese/NIf... #mri #macOS #nifti #neuroscience #science
happy saint patrick's day everyone
I could see some states increasingly funding science.

ISMRM Ultra-High Field / fMRI workshop in Annapolis, March 31'st to April 2'nd. The website is still being populated but so far looks exciting. Abstract deadline is January 10th. www.ismrm.org/workshops/20...
Neuroimaging Resource Alert: The NIH fMRI Summer Course has recorded talks available on YouTube from 2024, 2019, and 2018: fmrif.nimh.nih.gov/index.php/Su...
And we're actively working on uploading talks from 2014-2017! #fmri #neuroimaging
Fellow scientists: If you are going to make broad public pronouncements based on your results, please have someone check your math first. The general population is losing faith in science, and reversals like this are a big part of the problem.
"We need to get [scientists] to realise that history and philosophy of science has much to contribute to science itself"

You know the "🔹AI Overview" you get on Google Search?
I discovered today that it's repeating as fact something I made up 7 years ago as a joke.
"Kyloren syndrome" is a fictional disease I invented as part of a sting operation to prove that you can publish any nonsense in predatory journals...

I don't know if it's being added to @micahgallen.com's Cog Neuro starter pack or a real growth of users, but I've seen more new followers today than any time before. I've been in the fields of neuroscience and fMRI methodology for a while. I mostly post about science, mentorship, and job listings.
77 people in the starter pack! What a network! And #protip: if you add #MRI or #MRS to your post, they will automatically show up in the MRISky feed, which is also included in the pack! go.bsky.app/EVqd6pe
Looks like the secret is out! #neuro

New-ish grant mechanism for building scientific software. Would be prime opportunity to fund existing and new projects to carry science forward.
The Center for Multimodal Neuroimaging (CMN) and the FMRIF are hosting a workshop September 4-5 on “Insights Into Cognitive And Neural Function Through Eye Tracking”.
The hybrid workshop will be streamed on zoom, info: cmn.nimh.nih.gov/cmnworkshop2...

In all seriousness, try to make sure your personal statement or cover letter addresses these points: Why you? Why study/work here? Why now?
PSA for applications for graduate school: 1) your backstory can be interesting and not read like a pitch for the next limited-run Netflix show; 2) you’re allocated a maximum of 3 commas per sentence, with bonus points for the occasional semicolon; 3) passive voice is bad.
In our new paper out today at Trends in Cognitive Science, @lisik.bsky.social and I argue that social interaction perception is a visual process–computed by the visual system. (1/3)
