Eighty years ago today, April 29, 1945, Dachau was liberated. My mother's father was one of the American soldiers who liberated that camp. For the rest of his life, the smell of burnt eggs or hair would cause him to get sick. So deeply seared into his memory were the smells and sights of that day.
