I wouldn't agree. I accept that culturally you may look at it like that, but that's an imposition of the definition onto a group externally.
Here's why I think this is important :
When a definition is imposed onto a group, they can be dismissed. This generally leads to some pretty horrific outcomes
He does however perfectly fit within the definition of American Evangelicalism. And American exceptionalism. And a bunch of other stuff.
The simple point is there is more than one widely accepted definition Doug Wilson fails. Including accepting the Trinity, which he does not, however much he protests.
No true Scotsman requires one to (normally defensively) redefine the group's criteria to exclude the problematic person.
Where a definition already exists and has at least some credibility, the fallacy isn't in play.
And there are plenty of problematic people who fit the definition.
I get why one might. I just don't agree it's the correct response.
I'm no less disgusted. But dropping the label isn't helpful.
One way of holding these people to account is rejecting them from the group.
True. And Christians have done some awful things that aren't Christ-like at all.
Here's the thing. If I'm a vegan and I have chicken once or twice when I'm sorely tempted, I might remain vegan.
But if I have beef steaks every night, am I really a vegan just because I claim to be?
For sure. And I should be careful to point out that the question of salvation is different to the question of being a Christian.
Christianity has boundaries, but they are wider than most think and universal reconciliation may be found within them.
One who follows Christ, and one who conforms to at least the council of Nicea in terms of belief.
Wait, how do I get on?
To add to that, the woman being "ruled over" is literally part of the curse in Genesis 3.
So to perpetuate inequality is to perpetuate the curse and deny Christ's work on the cross.
I propose a new fallacy:
The "He is a true Scotsman fallacy".
The definition being, continuing to insist someone is part of a group despite them failing to meet the historical criteria to do so.
One more thought.
Correct actions (such as caring for the poor and the foreigners) are given as evidence of one's relationship with Christ. By their fruit, you shall know them.
The evangelical idea of "I said a prayer as fire insurance" is relatively new.
Some people say we should ceed the term Christian to these people and call ourselves Jesus followers.
Christian literally means follower of Jesus, so that seems a fruitless waste.
Anyway if I were the pope I'd kick out jd Vance. He's definitely not Catholic.
for their creation(it surely does, as does the USA failure of an experiment) is a separate question.
But if we as Christians aren't allowed to enforce our historical boundaries, something is desperately wrong with the logic.
The fundamental problem the view that these people are Christian faces is that they're outside of 2000 years of Christian tradition, and not by a small amount.
I don't have to change the definition of Christian. They're already outside of it.
Whether Christianity holds some responsibility
Why could you not accept that there are many who are false believers? Jesus himself makes literally this claim in Matthew 7:22. But here I am speaking specifically about the leaders.
As for your third definition, would it make sense to say I'm culturally Scottish because I like fried food?
But you dingleberries be out here like Christianity controls this malodorous malformed skunk.
He's a product of y'all's American exceptionalism and he uses Christianity as a tool for his own gain. Y'all need to own his Americaness first. Then we'll talk about his Christianity.
I am not just saying that to get out of dealing with a problematic person within my group.
You literally can't deal with Foug Dilson. He answers only to himself. What do you want me to do? Embrace his nonsense and baptize it as Christianity when it's not? Nah man, ain't doing it.
It's possible a person genuinely fails the definition of a Scotsman. Otherwise we are all true Scotsmen.
Y'all have less braincells than an orange cat.
I swear if I see one more person claiming "no true Scotsman", despite there being a clear definition the person falls outside of, I'm gonna have to point out that I am no true Scotsman, nor do I have right to claim so, because my ancestors come from the south of England you doofus.
No true Scotsman is often abused by people who are too lazy to do the hard work of understanding a group or the people in it. It is much easier to group people so you can dismiss the entire group.
It's sloppy lazy thinking, but par for the course on the internets.
Nah, I think it's fair to dismiss your claims outright as you don't understand your own claim of fallacy.
Under your definition, no group is allowed any boundaries self imposed or otherwise, so I think we can ignore your demands.
