I had sheer delight when James drew the Gentleman from the United comics I make. Very cool.

It's so good.
Apparently Dan Spiegle painted this Shadow commission in his 80s or 90s.
With 23 years of continuous work as a letterer, and over 30 years of print/production experience, I’m now unable to find any new lettering work in comics.
Please keep me in mind when staffing your creator-owned projects and please consider requesting me on your WFH projects 🙏
Alex Toth, "My Lifelong Thanks to the Very Best..."
Does this qualify as "Fan art"? Alex Toth draws TERRY AND THE PIRATES for a portfolio piece.

The new edition of my newsletter looks again at John Buscema's work, this time some issues from his first run on The Avengers.

I've been wondering about Gil Elvgren's influence on comic artists. Most recently, I've been studying John Buscema's work and I wonder if he incorporated any of Elvgren's anatomical technique into his own construction.
An article I wrote about David Mazzucchelli's innovative use of a cinematic technique in comics.

That final splash page is mind blowing.
Zenith had a pretty big influence on the type of comics I wanted to make. It's the closest 2000AD got to replicating that Marvel UK vibe.
Fun to do if not great for sharing in photos. Might do something similar with some established characters
Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #152 (1953). On the cover, Donald has his golf clubs and is about to go play when he finds his nephews painting his golf balls like Easter eggs.
Cover by Carl Barks.
Color illustration of Zatanna sitting and doing makeup in front of a circus attraction type poster of her. For a variant cover iirc.
Still a few A5 sketch slots left if you fancy getting the comic and something along these lines
Lovely painted headshot of Frankenstein by the legendary Bill Sienkiewicz
More Pittsburgh Comic Show Pick-Ups: Jim Steranko’s History of Comics, part 1.
Now the well-worn set is complete! Completely awesome!
The uneven slats just puts this into the stratosphere. The contrast of shapes just boggle my mind. It's not simple, it's efficient. The storytelling is layered into the meaning.
The greatest drawing of Sandman ever. It still blows my mind every time I see it. It's a magical drawing. It oozes mystery and noir.
The Alex Toth documentary is free on youtube BTW

My latest FREE comics newsletter is about John Buscema's work on Thor. I look in particular at a few issues and just lose my shit.

I can't say that this post-it drawing, the best drawing I've ever drawn, was directly inspired by this comic strip, but I'm sure it's in there somewhere.
31: Goliath & Cap - trapped by the Keeper
42: Goliath teams with Diablo against the Kooky Quartet (minus Cap).
51: Goliath shows off his new growth powers to Hawkeye, Thor, and Iron Man.
59: Yellowjacket stands victorious atop Goliath. Hawkeye, the Black Panther, and the Vision Rush to the scene, as the Wasp cradles Goliath’s head.
Henry Pym - cover boy
Exhibits presented by…
• Avengers 31 (1966) - Don Heck
• Avengers 42 (1967) - John Buscema & George Roussos
• Avengers 51 (1968) - John Buscema & Joe Sinnott
• Avengers 59 (1968) - John Buscema & George Klein
The cover of MAD 17.
Splash page for Kurtzman & Davis’s “What’s My Shine!”
Kurtzman & Wood’s meta parody Julius Caesar!
“Bringing Back Father!” Which told its story by going back and forth between Bill Elder doing a flawless imitation of McManus’ jazz age cartooning, and Bernard Krigstein’s relentlessly grim expressionism. The effect is kind of like that show “Kevin Can F*ck Himself” in case you’re one of the four dozen other people who watched it.
More old Kurtzman MADness.

We absolutely co-sign Nick's Genius Illustrated: The Life and Art of Alex Toth book. Also, that Creepy collection of Toth work is exceptional. Been reading that ever since filming this episode.
