The closure of Southend rips away jobs, education and the lifeblood of local businesses.

The rationale? Barely fills an A4 page.

In Westminister Yesterday MPs & union reps handed a vote of no confidence in Bowen to education minister Jacqui Smith.

While people feel the foundations of their lives are shaking, this deep crisis will continue | Clive Lewis The partisan debate since the Gorton and Denton byelection risks blinding us to the truth. People are rejecting wholesale the way our politics has developed, says Labour MP Clive Lewis

This is brilliant from @labourlewis.bsky.social. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
One can only hope that at least some of the Parliamentary Labour Party can derive some advantage, or at least insight, from Clive spelling out here WHY half of them are likely to lose their seats to Greens.

Reform cuts ESOL funding as it doesn't help "native Lincolnshire people" Responding to a report that Reform mayor of Lincolnshire Andrea Jenkyns is pushing ahead with plans to scrap all funding for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) from 2027, UCU attacked the ...

Reform mayor of Lincolnshire has voted to slash ESOL.

A clear signal of the damage Reform intends to inflict on our communities.

Demanding migrants speak English then cutting the very provision that makes that possible.

Palantir was a warning sign.

Keir Starmer choosing to hand our data and security to US tech companies is an outrageous failure of judgment.

All in the name of "investment." What about national security?

Prayer for Uninteresting Times

Send me a slow news day,
a quiet, subdued day,
in which nothing much happens of note,
save for the passing of time,
the consumption of wine,
and a re-run of Murder, She Wrote.

Grant me a no news day,
a spare-me-your-views day,
in which nothing much happens at all,
except a few hours together
some regional weather,
a day we can barely recall.

UK university degree no longer ‘passport to social mobility’, says King’s vice-chancellor Prof Shitij Kapur says there are too many graduates and degree is now just a ‘visa’ to enter professional world

Entire political class cohering around the project of telling two generations simply to lower their expectations. Definitely going to end well.

This was the year that was not the year

This was the year that was not the year
I repaired the bathroom tap
and emptied out the kitchen drawer
of a lifetime’s worth of crap.

This was the year that was not the year
in which I launched a new career.
A West End hit eluded me
as did Time Person of the Year.

This was the year that was not the year
I became a household name.
Action figures were not sold of me.
I wasn’t made a dame.

This was the year that was not the year
I spent less time on my phone.
A night of passion did not happen
in a boutique hotel in Rome.

This was the year that was the year
I didn't get that much done –
much the same as the year before,
much like the one to come.

Gifts, temptation and the colossal corrosion of politics At Westminster, gifts and freebies aren’t simple goodwill, but rather part of the slow pull of money that turns heads, normalises privilege and corrodes public service

’Tis the season for presents and goodwill. In Westminster, especially over the Christmas period, the giving of gifts, freebies and swanky receptions for MPs, their advisors and colleagues go into overdrive.

We are living in an era of sickness caused by political choices. Many are getting more ill under the weight of poor working conditions, inadequate incomes, precarious housing and overstretched health and social care services. The fault for this lies squarely at the feet of successive governments who have chosen profit over people.

🚨Our statement on #Budget2026

Yet more Government actions that place the burden on Disabled people instead of taking responsibility for an unequal and inaccessible society that the Government has the power to change.

UCU ballot results: 32 colleges vote to strike over pay and workload Pay deals were agreed at a further 17 colleges during the ballot window

32 colleges hit the turnout threshold. 90% backed strike action.

Our ballots have already won pay deals at 17 colleges now others must follow.

College teachers are still paid £9,000 less than school teachers. This isn’t sustainable. Pay parity now.

Health and care funding crisis will create pressure to choose assisted suicide, MPs and peers are told Many terminally-ill people would feel “duress” and “pressure” to choose an assisted suicide if it is legalised, because of the lack of funding for the NHS, palliative care and social care services,…

🚨Liz Carr's evidence against the Assisted Dying Bill

"Once [Assisted Suicide] becomes a medical treatment, then that’s when it terrifies me, because it happens behind closed doors and is based on medical subjectivity"
