I'm a college professor and I'm getting incoming students who have this same attitude. They don't care about being present, about doing the work, about learning...they just want a good grade.

I care a lot about my students' learning. But I can't keep make them learn if they don't want to.

Mixed reaction from students Berk Yaveuz, a high school student at Jarvis Collegiate, said the new measures from the province would push him to attend class. “[I’ll] need to attend class to get marks, so I’ll have to,” he said. Yaveuz said it’s not surprising that many students aren’t regularly attending school because “we just need [the] grades.” Persia Boothe, also a student at Jarvis Collegiate, said students could be skipping classes because “school is kind of boring … it’s not really fun and not enjoyable.” Boothe said she doesn’t think tying attendance to school marks would motivate students to show up, and it wouldn’t personally motivate her to go to class. “I know for a lot of people, if they already don’t care about their grade or the work or the school or the courses, they don’t care about their attendance,” she said.

In Ontario, only 40% of high schoolers and 55.5% of Elementary Schoolers meet the attendance standard. So the Ontario Board of Education passed new regulations saying that 15% of a high school student's grade will be tied to attendance. Below is student response:

I do pay attention to other people.

The driver isn’t slowing down. The walker doesn’t see the car. No one else says or does anything. I throw up my hand and shout at the guy—“Stop stop stop!” He stops and the car zooms by just missing him.

No one else did or said anything. I assume they weren’t paying attention to other people.

I sort of saved someone’s life today. I was standing at a weird 5-way intersection crosswalk with a bunch of folks waiting for the light to change. When this guy just starts crossing against the light not playing attention. A car is coming right at him. The driver has got that anti-pedestrian look.

To correct the record:
PhD in addition to my Masters.
This is my 10 year Streamaversary rather than 8.
And I started gaming 1983 rather than the 70s.
And Okami is a wonderfully supportive beam who deserves all the love!

What I will say is this: I have a version of Hamlet that has been in my head since high school. I began composing music for it in college. One day I might be able to stage it and share these visions in my head with others. But until that happens…go see Suzy Eddie Izzard!

I just got out of seeing Hamlet, done as a one-woman show Suzy Eddie Izzard. She’s a brilliant performer—her Dressed to Kill stand up special is marvelous. But what a wonderful thing she’s done here. I highly recommend supporting this show! I went solo, so I have no one to post-show process with!
