Our REU renewal was funded!
We found out today so we are accepting applications now! Like right now!
Application review is going to happen swiftly as we know we’re are late in the typical cycle.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) funds over 300,000 researchers at more than 2,500 institutions across all 50 U.S. states, supporting roughly 390,863 jobs and driving $94
billion in economic activity. I am one of them and am thankful to all who pay the taxes that support this enterprise 🧪
Did you apply for an NSF GRFP fellowship this year? Good for you! Even just applying is a big accomplishment. I didn't get the fellowship (or an honorable mention), and maybe you didn't either. No matter what, congratulations for submitting that beast of an application! I'm proud of you!
Very thoughtful essay (especially when paired with the data), Raghu
Congratulations, Sreyoshi and @agrossfield.bsky.social!

One critical organization turns out to be www.landesa.org. Tons of awards. I wasn't aware that its founder was a former Prof. of Law at UW. (Hey UW colleagues: we can donate to Landesa through the UW Combined Fund Drive!)
“You were never supposed to see any of this and—between you and me—let’s just say you never did,” said a local man as he cracked his knuckles to a Californian standing awestruck in a Dodgers tank, cutoff shorts, and flip flops. “You see...pom-poms of cherry blossoms...? The answer is no you did not"
A drawing titled "Wild Rabbit vs. Easter Bunny". On the left, there's a wild cottontail bunny sitting down looking alert. On the right, there's a cartoonish Easter Bunny wearing a little polkadot vest and standing next to some colorful eggs. The wild bunny is labeled "Eyes on the sides of the head to watch for predators." and the Easter Bunny "Forward-facing eyes to hunt for meat." Wild bunny: "Active all year." Easter Bunny: "Only active in Spring - otherwise in diapause as a cyst?" Wild bunny: "Walks on four legs." Easter Bunny: "Unusual bipedal stance." Wild bunny: "Plain brown and white fur." Easter Bunny: "Distinctive vest-like markings." Wild bunny: "Gives birth to live young." Easter Bunny: "Steals and redistributes eggs; parasitic reproductive strategy?"
Few are brave enough to acknowledge the truth.
Whoa! Very interesting result, @ibudin.bsky.social!
yyeeaaaAAAAAHHHH! @theebikinikill.bsky.social is playing at Bumbershoot!!! Today just got a lot better
Proud to know you, @subodhchandra.bsky.social! I liked your focus on concrete actions we can take, like contacting our senators and representatives. I agree that 5calls.org makes this easy and fast, and that our senators need to hear from us about how damaging the SAVEAct will be to our democracy
It's a beautiful, warm, sunny day in Seattle! You can have it all: park at UW, see the sakura blossoms, then jump on the light rail for 2 stops to the No Kings March at Cal Anderson park (or ride one stop farther to grab lunch at Pike Place market and join the march toward Seattle Center) 🌸
Photo of a cherry tree in full blossom in front of Drumheller fountain with stately red brick buildings in the background. The sky is blue and the sun is shining. It's beautiful!
It is cherry blossom season at the University of Washington! Bring the family for photos! We are between terms until Monday, so buses and light rail are nearly empty. If you need to drive, there's lots of parking.
The trees are all achingly beautiful. (And you know you need a break from the news.)
Trust me--read this. You'll be glad you did. and thank you Dr. Bennet for writing it. 🧪
Admission is free today at the Northwest African American Museum (2300 S Massachusetts St), open until 5 p.m., honoring 19th century investigative journalist and civil rights leader Ida B. Wells, who died on this day in 1931.

Okay so why was I the only one in the theater tonight who gasped when Ryan Gosling ran a centrifuge with two tubes in the whole thing, sitting right next to each other? Sorry was I the only scientist in the film society theater tonight??

I am reviewing a simply amazing paper from a relatively young US-based lab, which is in danger of shutting its doors later this year. My emotions are all over the place.
The fact that this does not uniquely identify the lab I’m referring to just deepens the tragedy of this moment in US science.
Excited to be visiting my Rep Sarah Elfreth to advocate for #science funding #NIH #NSF #FASEB Hill Day @elfreth.house.gov @biophysicalsoc.bsky.social #SheLeads #MedicalResearchSavesLives

Whoa! @vesiclesmasher.bsky.social, have you seen this preprint? It is almost a mash-up of all your previous and current labs and projects, rolled into one

Wow - I am definitely telling my research group about this one! @ibudin.bsky.social, @mejohnson81.bsky.social, and Cecilia Leal will discuss membrane bending in a way "accessible to undergraduate students interested in biochemistry and biophysics as well as specialists in the field."
Uh-oh. I just learned what risographs are. I also learned that Seattle has risograph zine classes!! I have a VERY strong urge to make risograph cover art this weekend. Instead I need to make my deadline to write the grant to cover the science to go in the journal to be illustrated by the art. Focus!
