Looking forward to this!

Yep! I hope its an anomaly of the recent UKRI changes rather than the new reality.

Thanks! Yes. I’m grateful to reviewers for at least being nice, because that feels like all I can hold on to!

Absolutely gutted by the recent UKRI MRC rejection, with review scores of 5,5, and 6 (out of 6).

I don't really know what we could have done. Hours of work by me, my co-leads, and importantly, our stakeholders, including parents, teachers and SENCOs.

MRC instructs grant review boards to slash funding rates - Research Professional News Boards asked to recommend just three applications for funding, as BBSRC also suspends calls

Would have been good to have added an apology for the lack of comms so far this year, particularly for those that submitted grants to UKRI applicant-led funding streams in Sept 2025, as these are highly unlikely to be funded (www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-r...)

2 months ago 8 4 2 3

Of course all grants are competitive. But this is a serious change, and some advance comms would have changed the funding schemes I targeted.

I - and I am sure many others - poured hours into our grant application last summer. These are not straightforward applications involving one group, as there are many researchers, patients, families and educators involved .. Hearing this makes me feel all our time was wasted.

🧩Learning to talk & read isn’t just about effort or teaching—it’s shaped by biology, experience & context

🧠Our new review links genetics, neuroscience, psychology & education to show why some children find language or reading easier.

It’s not just what you read—it’s whether you chose to read it.

In our new paper out at QJEP 🎉 we show that:
👉 Having a choice over what you read makes reading more enjoyable
👉 …and makes people willing to pay more for books
