1/6 Our paper is out today in Nature Communications!
From the SFB/TRR 289 Treatment Expectation @sfb-trr-289.bsky.social we show that temporal expectations shape somatosensory perception - for both painful heat AND non-painful cold stimuli.
Really excited about our new work on aphasia! Even in fairly profound aphasia, we can recover semantic maps through visual stimuli and use them to decode language. This is a big step! Language BCIs in aphasia might be possible!
Can we really measure replay in humans using MEG with current methods? In our most recent paper we simulated replay under realistic conditions via a novel hybrid approach with astonishing results.
we're delighted that it has now been published @elife.bsky.social!

Frag den Staat veröffentlicht Chatverläufe zwischen den Abgeordneten Goiny und Stettner und Kultursenatorin Wedl-Wilson. Es sind verstörende Einblicke.
Do you censor high motion frames in fMRI? In two preprints by @twktan.bsky.social @mandymejia.bsky.social, we find that we may be censoring too much!

Strict censoring leads to worse personalized TMS targets than no censoring, even with high motion!
I defended my PhD 10 years ago today. That was the least remarkable thing that happened that day. Sharing something I wrote about it last year. Since then "the horrors persist but so do we." And with dignity.
How do people search for information to make efficient decisions?
Our new theory, now out in Psychological Review, suggests that an efficient search rule is (at the core of) the answer. And eye-tracking data support our theory.

Important take on the sustainability aspect of open science!

Attention fluctuates over time and across contexts—how is this reflected in the brain?🧠 Fitting a dynamical systems model to fMRI data, we show that the geometry of neural dynamics along the attractor landscape reflects changes in attention. Out in @natcomms.nature.com

Vocal production learning is a key ability enabling spoken language, but is not itself unique to humans, having been documented in (e.g.) some bird, bat, & seal species. A new study of pinnipeds in @science.org 👇 finds they have neural adaptations supporting voluntary control of vocalizations.

We directly tested a common assumption in neuroimaging:
Is resting-state the best estimate of intrinsic organization?
Spoiler: Across datasets and brain systems, multi-task fMRI did better.

How dynamics arise from the structure is my biggest interest. In this study, we started with a small step and asked how structure constrains dynamics. Spoiler: would that it were so simple… (1/6)
A recent @natneuro.nature.com paper analyzed lesion network mapping and raised concerns about the validity of the method.

A few years ago, I was on a commission here in the Max Planck Society that tried to motivate the society to stop wasting millions of Euros on Microsoft licenses for bad calendar and email software. That and Elsevier subscriptions are just wasteful use of public funds imo. >
