The “Reproductive Horizons of Abolition” conference over the past 2 days was absolutely amazing. I know being in academia and working in this space can be a bit isolating, but there are so many incredible people all over the world working toward the same thing. There is so much to be hopeful for.

💡 As we close this chapter at EYE, we want to give a huge THANK YOU to all our guests and participants for their incredible insights and discussions. Stay tuned for more updates on the research project!
Schuppli left us with the question: What new ways of remembering can emerge through the study of ice memory? She urged us to consider a future of “just-ice to come” (a play on justice and ice 🤓).
Building on themes from the series (film heritage and audiovisual archives), this session explored how ice memory challenges us to think beyond human-centered perspectives. As glaciers disappear, we not only lose parts of our environment but also the memories they hold.
Schuppli’s talk highlighted the links between environmental history, film preservation, and geopolitical structures. She discussed how ice, as a chemically neutral storage medium like film, can store historical traces — including those of (neo)colonial violence, pollution, and climate catastrophe.
✨ Recap: The final session of Decolonial Futures of Audiovisual Archives and Archiving at EYE Filmmuseum!
🎥 To close the series, we welcomed artist-researcher Susan Schuppli, who presented her ongoing work on ice memory, and ice as both an archival and audiovisual medium.
We're proud to announce the first event in our Masterclass Series, featuring our visiting scholar @drqv.bsky.social. 🥳
The class is aimed at UvA PhDs and postdocs, building a community of visiting researchers and emerging talents in the field.

3️⃣ Ecology, sustainability & climate change (e.g., how to establish a just system of climate reparations?)
🔗Please read the full call on decolonialfutures.uva.nl/funding-call...
2️⃣ Migrations, mobility & borders (e.g., how to account for the role of colonial histories
and neocolonial exploits in motivating and directing migratory movements and border control policies?)
1️⃣ Museums, archives & cultural practices (e.g., how to deal with demands to restitute art
objects acquired through colonial exploits and with contentious monuments?)
The call is open in terms of Decolonial research themes, but we particularly encourage submissions
which substantively speak to two of the three themes of the RPA ⬇️

❄️ Ecological matter like glaciers archive planetary and human histories, producing what Schuppli refers to as "ice memory".
🧠 What if we viewed human history as part of a larger process of how the Earth records time and space? What could that mean for our thinking about politics?
📽️ The fifth and final session of the Decolonial Futures of Audiovisual Archives and Archiving research project takes place on Wednesday, January 29th, from 14:00-17:00 at EYE Filmmuseum with artist-researcher Susan Schuppli. 🔗 tinyurl.com/23m3hs64
