One more week to apply! This is a friendly, low-commitment group and a great opportunity to meet new early career scholars.
Do consider applying even if you are not in London full-time but not too far (we currently have a Cambridge member, for instance!)

Documents of revolution and reform: Henry of Marchington, the king’s chancery and the chronicle of Burton* Abstract. This article aims to demonstrate that much of the information found in the chronicle of Burton for the 1250s was obtained through Henry of Marchi

Delighted that some of my recent PhD research has just been published in Historical Research! It explores connections between the chronicle written at Burton Abbey in the mid-C13 and the royal chancery

The law determines what is legal. It does not determine what is true; what is just; what is morally and ethically sound and defensible. The history of law is the history of the legal system being wrong on these grounds.

The lovely image is from BL, Cotton MS Vespasian E iii, f. 39r (Burton chronicle). The letter, from the patriarch of Jerusalem to the queen of France (1251), is one of the numerous inserted documents (about 130!)

Hello everyone! I'm a 2nd-year PhD student working on 13th-century documentary culture. I have an interest in documents throughout the medieval period, and in how modern categories of understanding these documents (cartularies, chronicles, acta) can sometimes fail to fully describe them.
