Great podcast and fun episode — but did you know that (at least in the US) one of the advertisers is Abeka Books, a producer of anti-science, Christian nationalist textbooks? I was shocked to hear them attached to (and implicitly normalized by) any BBC podcast, but especially this one.
The day started with tragedy with political violence in MN and instead of being scared, neighbors SHOWED UP to stand together at No Kings Twin Cities. We packed the Capitol Mall all the way to the Cathedral. Estimate 80,000+ right now. So proud of our state. #nokings #indivisible
So feminist 🙃
Not “preferred” but I hope the point stands
Beyond that! She chose to write mystery novels as Robert Galbraith! Preferred names/pronouns for JKR but no one else
Please DO SOMETHING with this! How have you only posted once since then? Why am I not seeing ad buys on all my social media?? She just gave the IDP a GIFT and this is all you’ve had to say about it???
Screenshot of Ben Greene posting, “Real talk about doing advocacy without ableism: Why are we still body/disability shaming the far right when deep sea fish names exist?? Why would I fat shame (tired, hurtful, fatphobic) when I could call you a faceless cusk (devastating, confusing, no comeback) We need better insults!!”
Also good: abyssal comb jelly, balloon worm, fragile pink sea urchin, giant ostracod, midwater eelpout, predatory tunicate, vampire squid, wigdroid jelly (@montereybayaquarium.org has a great list here: www.montereybayaquarium.org/visit/exhibi...)
@booker.senate.gov emphasizing that the Declaration of Independence is a Declaration of Interdependence (“we mutually pledge…”) is what got me right in the gut. #redeemthedream
#Severance is making me nostalgic for the heyday of Lost fandom, when we were making theories about hairbrushes
At various points I was into all of these except Insects. Not listed but also childhood obsessions: Alexandre Dumas novels, Golden Age detectives, ragtime music, King Arthur, Robin Hood, and reading the dictionary and encyclopedia
Yeah, exactly. Same enraged white billionaires — but what will the population do?
Democratic lawmakers need to understand something:
Imagine your house is on fire. Fire truck shows up. Firefighters get out. They look at the fire, then at you, and say: "Such a fire is a grave threat. This house will not sustain."
And just stand there.
This is how many of you are coming across.
I have wondered whether South Africa will face the same challenges, since they actually made systematic efforts at reconciliation. That’s really different from a bunch of white guys in the US beating the Nazis abroad and then coming home to support Jim Crow
“See? Pouchless” 🐐🐐🐐
i have written about this before but i have become extremely civic republican virtue pilled as a result of all of this. democracy will not work without an active effort to cultivate virtue among ordinary people!
I can only assume that Ugg accidentally mass-produced something that was only ever supposed to be an SNL skit
UGG® Classic Ultra Ultra Convertible Over the Knee Boot (Women) $429.97 (28% off) $600.00 **** Brown Ugg boot with four additional zippered segments to extend the boot upward past the knee. Each segment gets progressively lighter, from brown to tan to orange to yellow to white. The effect is kind of like a candy corn. But uglier.
Congratulations to Ugg for achieving remarkable new heights in boot ugliness
Okay but I AM teaching All’s Well this semester for the first time 👀
At first I thought uncharitable thoughts about MBA recommenders driving the design, but then I remembered AI. I confess I have wondered what percentage of recommenders ask ChatGPT to write the letters.

Unfortunately I did cackle at this
SABBATICAL APPROVED, Jan-May 2026 (lord willing and the creek don’t rise)
Image of text: "It's gone too far this time,” said a peasant. “All this burning and taxing and now this. I blame you witches. It's got to stop. I know my rights." "What rights are they?" said Granny. "Dunnage, cowhage-in-ordinary, badinage, leftovers, scrommidge, clary and spunt," said the peasant promptly. "And acornage, every other year, and the right to keep two-thirds of a goat on the common. Until he set fire to it. It was a bloody good goat, too."
Guess what’s on my Magic & Witchcraft syllabus next semester
The Three Musketeers: We Survived D’Artagnan
Seven or eight artificial Christmas trees are lit up in a dim indoor space. They’re colorful.
They call this the Festival of Trees but there’s never any feasting. I think someone should eat the tree that was set up by the local “crisis pregnancy center” though
