It took 16 years, many elections, and so much work. It also took a populist movement, not a trustworthy initiative by a long shot. The idea we can recover from backsliding at the polls offers enormous hope but is by no means promised.
It sounds like it would be difficult but would it really be so bad to end the Internet and invest in newspapers, record and video stores, and libraries

Every time we think we see a single tool that changes everything, look behind the scenes. There is an economic or political powerplay already underway. Technologies are conscripted into that fight in such a way that they appear to displace or render the social background invisible. Convenient.
"AI" arrives on the heels of a) global economic collapse, b) global pandemic causing serious and severe geopolitical disruption. Perfect opportunity for capitalists to restructure economies and make markets around core players.
AI itself is a poor product, it's a tool for economic capture.
