this guy converted to catholicism in 2019 and thinks he can correct the pope. absolutely incredible.

evangelical Christians don't really care about the Pope and in fact are often pretty anti-Catholic. the (largely, but somewhat inconsistently Republican) constituency @profgalloway.com means to refer to are Roman Catholics.

Clergy and church leader friend in the Episcopal Church—starting next Monday I'll start sending out the TEC Trajectory study surveys (the extension of the bright spots surveys I did last fall) to pretty close to every church in TEC (the criteria is that they had an asa of at least 15 in either 2011 or 2024 and still be active). They'll be coming from either an @trinityosh.org or @forwardmovement.org address.
Here's what I need from you: please share widely in your dioceses that this is coming. Please check for the emails, including in your junk email. PLEASE FILL IT OUT (I only need on submission per survey per church, with 3 or 4 surveys). And finally, if you are not a supervising clergyperson or rector, please check with your supervising clergyperson or rector and make sure they got it and filled it out.
This extension is going to give us VITAL control data to know what practices truly set growing churches apart from the rest, which will offer potentially actionable things for ALL of us. It will also give us something of a TEC census on things like piety, etc. We need as many churches as possible to fill it out. So, if you do nothing else, share this post!

it might be an indictment but also it might be that a significant portion of secular individuals and media sources don‘t want to have their assumptions (prejudices?) challenged. can‘t force these people to hear us.

no, it is part of the curriculum. the problem is that education does not guarantee that people will behave properly.
in other words, knowing the right thing to do doesn’t mean one will do the right thing.

i have nothing against any part parish, just the use of generative AI in liturgy and worship!

honestly, i don’t know!

To preach is to take on a holy task that should make you shudder. It is opening up the Scriptures to proclaim God here and now, Christ and Christ crucified, Christ resurrected, for you and for me. It is to proclaim a message of life. 🕯️

Preaching, according to Rev. Levenstrong's writings, is to be "human centered". Not sure how that works with using Generative AI to write a sermon to begin with, but regardless, I would wager, with two millennia of church history, that preaching is actually Christ centered. 🕯️

My other serious problem with TryTank's decision and with Rev. Levenstrong's Generative AI soapbox is Rev. Levenstrong's longstanding push for clergy and lay leaders to use Generative AI for preaching, liturgy, and outreach.
Anathema. Seriously. 🕯️

3. Generative AI is a mirage of efficiency and omniscience, made and promoted by individuals who do not understand life and human wholeness--or who just don't care.

I will not use a resource that will further degrade the people and places I come from. 🕯️

2. Generative AI is destructive of:
a. the environment
b. so-called low skill jobs that are the backbone of the kinds of communities i grew up in
c. human powers of cognition and creativity 🕯️

1. Generative AI is plagiaristic of:
a. artists' and writers' creative property
b. the deeply human work of thinking, writing, and re-writing with thought to relationship and audience.

It is a thief. 🕯️

I have deep concerns over the use of Generative AI in our church life. In fact, I am deeply against it. Here's why:
