It is a bit mad how much learning Gaeilge shaped the course of my life. I never really intended for it to become my actual livelihood, I was only ever really intending to do stupid tweets about my hot takes, but now I've done both and I have a mortgage

There was a big taboo when he was growing up about learning for the sake of learning; learning if it didn't earn you money, but he held on to it and now, years after he's gone, his granddaughter's still in England and working full time with Irish and bought a house thanks to it!
I've found talking about heritage in a Gaeilge context a little contentious given the rise of fascism, but there was always something beautiful to me about a working-class man in Liverpool holding on to the bits of Irish he had.
My Scouse grandad would always say Go mbeannaí Dia dhuit to me each St Patrick's Day and it took literally 6 years of me learning Irish, after he'd left us, to work out that's what he'd been saying every year.

Kneecap have multiple sexual assault allegations against them. I'd love to know why, when this is well known, that AVA Festival in Belfast has chosen to book them for their 2026 lineup?
