He is an evolutionary developmental biologist and has been working for many years on the evolution of the immune system, in particular the role of microorganisms in the evolution and development of animals and humans. In 2016 he founded the Collaborative Research Center 1182 “Origin and Function of Metaorganisms” at Kiel University. He uses Hydra as a model system to understand the evolution of host-microbe interactions.
