Society began to fall apart when they replaced finite length progress bars with infinite spinners.

20 years later, Nintendo's weird RPG Mother 3 remains the greatest game never sold Mother 3, the sequel to Earthbound, came out 20 years ago today--but not in America, where it's never been released.

Today marks 20 years of people complaining about Mother 3 not getting localized, and I celebrated the occasion by writing about how the complainers have a very real point:

My fave official variant of this song is the one where the choir continues into the latter half of the song, morphing into a wonderful chaos

Also please give Charlie Day's Luigi a Luigi's Mansion movie, it would be so perfect

In short, the Mario movies are fun and I'm excited to see what comes next

For the criticisms of relying too much on game references, it's impossible (and not desirable, really) to divorce the movie from the games. The movie isn't designed to stand on its own, it is intended to be a companion to the games. It is The Super Mario Bros Movie, the relation is in the title

"But what about Super Mario RPG or Paper Mario or the Mario & Luigi series?"

As great as those are, they are spinoffs. Nintendo is making these Mario movies in the vein of the main line Mario games, like it or not. That's the objective, and so far the results are consistent

I will be much more critical of the storytelling in the Zelda movie when it comes; Zelda is a series where Nintendo has always been at least somewhat concerned with its themes and lore, even if only within the individual titles. But Mario? That's just always been about having a fun ride

Story in Mario is scaffolding to support the platforming gameplay. In the movies, due to them not being interactive, the platforming gameplay has been replaced with action set pieces, which is a smart change in my book. The movies are doing the exact same thing the main line games have always done

So The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was delightful and I think anyone seriously critiquing the story is being a bit dishonest about the role that story plays in Mario media in general. Was whimsy and fun delivered? If yes, then the Mario story did its job, full stop. That's all Mario's ever been doing

If Artemis is going up then it gives me an excuse to once again post this photo, the only one to contain every human being in the universe but one.

First playthroughs of the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 main game and the Torna story DLC are now completed to my level of satisfaction. Now begins the New Game+ runs for both. Should move a lot quicker since all the "big" things I care about should carry over. A surprisingly bittersweet feeling, honestly

It's funny to look back at how, as a kid, I thought that the overly evil/cruel villains in fiction were a bit unrealistic. "Like, aren't people and their motivations a bit more complicated than that?" How naïve I was
