They probably tried to make a male-coded cover: men centered, action-shot, woman only in the distance where she won't try to join any adventures, lol. WH's association with a central love story probably was off-putting to younger male readers, so they tried to hint at violence w the whip

Heathcliff looks as if he's about to go werewolf

I've been fully Heights-pilled and it's out of hand. But so much fun! I just listened to a 4-hr pod series on Lord Byron bc he was a big inspo for Heathcliff. He was also tragic, far less of an outsider apart from his own choices

Yeah ceasefire was put on hold per agreement with the current administration, and here we are. You're right in this whole thread, sadly. Drove me nuts at the time bc the alternative was clearly so. much. worse. And now we know for sure!

Whoo hoo! Although thematically, WH should come first because it's the 1st half of the novel ans Saltburn is part-inspired by the 2nd half. But I'll allow it!

If you find it fun, you have already won. Well done!

Re adaptation, it's unusual but DEEPLY reverent of the book, with 80+ references. Scenes are moved around +characters are composites. Nearly all themes are there but hidden on 1st watch. Ppl hated Saltburn at 1st also, now they love it. Same will happen w/ WH once ppl absorb it I think. (3/3)

Why is class missing? We get lectures on it from Cathy& Mr E. It's 1 of the biggest themes of the film? Glad you mentioned Arnold, they're 180 from each other. I don't think the race element worked in 2011 at all. Fennell said she wanted to tell an S&M love story w/o navigating racial politics (2/3)

Super in depth article, well done! Sorry you felt nothing, it's either that or sobbing uncontrollably. Your sources are good but I think it's a VERY layered film telling multiple stories/themes to multiple audiences, the 14yo girl is 1. The mature woman seeing Heathcliff for who he is is 2 (1/3)

1, impressive you got a library copy, they're in short supply. 2, that's the right attitude! Look up Webster's 1828 dictionary if you get really stuck/curious, but many words you can understand from context. Good luck!

Love story if you buy into Cathy/Heathcliff's feelings for each other. It will not be enjoyable apart from the kind of pleasure that comes from some kinds of pain, which is a huge theme of the book. Everyone is indeed terrible, the author will not make the love story or even the book easy for you.

My take is 180 degrees different. On the 1st watch I was captivated, felt the film was speaking in multiple 'languages'. So i reread the novel+studied Euro art+history+read lit essays. Imo it's so layered, detailed, deferential to the book, academic, multi-themed. 1 scene tells 4 stories. Genius

My favorite is a 4th-wall break where Heathcliff says she mistakenly saw him as some kind of romantic hero, and it's like I see what you did there, Emily!

Yes but LOTS of people are reading it now for the first time.

Oh i think I'm dnf'ing the Monk. Right now it's just officially a pause but going from Wuthering Heights to it felt like a massive downshift

Commented on another post but yes, agree! Imo even deeper than you give it credit but wow what a beautiful way to recreate the world of a novel

What are the thoughts? Spill!

This is exactly it! Except I think it's even deeper and more meaningful than he's saying. It's a wild, bold, visual delight. And it's detailed and layered with tons of refs to classical art. 1 shot is posed on a Vermeer but the theme matches a painting within the Vermeer. Tons of visual symbolism

Yeah I can see that. I knew the Isabella thing would divide people

Wasn't it!!

Sorry you didn't like it! It covers only part 1 but still had: child abuse, animal abuse, cruelty, classism, psych manipulation, trauma-informed behavior, imprisonment, gaslighting, women's health dismissiveness, murder, addiction abuse, revenge, CSA. It was plenty for me

It's so devastating!

Yes it is a *ride*. Wildly original yet takes a lot from the book, especially dialogue

Yeah it realllly took liberties there. Someone said there was a theory that she and a sis were in a love triangle with the curate. There's also a theory about an inappro. relationship w her bro. No real evidence for either, I think. She just seems like a weirdo loner and why isn't that enough??

Paradise Lost reading is: Moors= Eden, adam+eve. Abuse=expulsion, lost innocence Cathy =Sin from Paradise Lost, Heathcliff =Satan/Death. Death loves Sin but destroys life on earth. Sin is the 'monstrous feminine' (cruelty) w a 'lethally fertile' womb (miscar'ge) who makes Satan fall (H's revenge)

Ahhh ok: symbols show class upheaval, question morality vs free will, ask if evil can coexist w love, shows social brutality on women, shows how trauma informs behav for life, questions our victim/perp abuse narr've, asks what we owe to our true selves. Cathy's marked for death, the story is why

It's just... unfathomable. We had a guy who wore a tan suit and got an advanced screening of a popular tv show and lost our minds. But this is somehow...going on? A 2nd time???
