It’s cool, mate: We know a majority aren’t on for this horrorshow. You’ll be fine.

New Model Army

Been years since you've thrown a punch but you still don't think people should go to a match without expecting it. Your portfolio, put together on a dare by making the most cynical investments possible, is doing well. Yours is a strictly "no paw patrol" household.

AI is great for spotting typos, but following its stylistic suggestions tends to flatten out the quirks that make prose interesting. It’s a bit like putting someone’s voice through a modulator that makes them sound like someone else? Not great for forming a connection between people.

Yes, as a Lambeth resident and Labour Party member I sadly have to agree with you

It occurs to me that there are Republicans in Congress who assured themselves a year ago that they’d be able to shut it all down if things ever got wildly out of control, not realizing that when things are wildly out of control is exactly the time that it’s hardest to shut it all down.

Am I German or Autistic? A rigorous diagnostic. 15 questions. One uncomfortable truth.

47% German, 11% Autistic: “I took the German or Autistic diagnostic and I'm apparently just German. Kant would approve. german.millermanschool.com/%E2%80%9C

This is absolutely true, and in no way crazy. In most European countries you even need your boss’s permission to go to the lavatory, whether you are in the office or not. In my own country, the UK, a week’s advance notice is generally required.

@zannah
This is the scale that I will be using for everything from now on.
Boasting a guest verse from Dr. Dre, what classic '90s R&B hit features Blackstreet singing, "I like the way you work it"?
A: No Diggity
B: Hardly Any Diggity
C: A Fair Amount of Diggity
D: An Overwhelming Surplus of Diggity

[Scene is a MOON BASE on the moon. The Moonbase has an AMAZON logo on the top of its domed glass roof. From inside it, we hear a voice.]:

WHEEEE

Cut to interior scene. We see it is the voice of a man in a space suit, bouncing around in the low gravity, having a great time. We gradually realise that this man is Jeff Bezos.

Boing

haha.

Wheeee!

[close in on Jeff's face]

JEFF BEZOS:
Alexa!

 Set gravity to ‘Earth’.

ALEXA HOME SPEAKER:
Sure! Ending poverty on Earth now…

JEFF BEZOS:
No!

Alexa, *stop*…

Set gravity levels to 'Earth'.

ALEXA:
Sure Jeff.

Whum. [Jeff gently sticks to the ground]

[Pause.]

ALEXA:

Jeff - would you like to continue with: 'End poverty on Earth'?

[Jeff thinks about this for a very long time, his face in a rictus of awkwardness. His eyes dart left and right in his head, while he is frozen in thought. This goes on for many panels.]

[in the final panel it just cuts to Jeff bouncing again, saying "Wheee"]

[Ends]

A friend went round to his neighbours’ for Eid last night and apparently the wife slightly panicked about hosting white people because she disappeared for a couple of minutes and came back with half a pint of whisky for him. This, to me, is multiculturalism

Folks, I regret to inform you: This design was OK'd by the Citizens Coin Advisory Committee in...October 2024. Its design was set in place when Biden was in office. The designer left out the olive branch to symbolize the colonists' not yet achieving peace, but hoping for it. Trump didn't do this.

I see similar tendencies in ethics with some adherents of effective altruism and their efforts to optimise through a utilitarian lens. Derek Parfit disparaged this as overuse of the “Linear Model” - not everything is best thought of as being on a numeric scale, to compare against other numbers.

I've seen a lot of posts recently about whether LLMs can be conscious. I think not, due to their static nature. This paper argues my position very well. To the many who will find it hard going, I recommend asking ChatGPT to summarise its arguments: it does an excellent job.

I will unfollow, mute or block rather than scream or yell. But ultimately it’s just very hard for me to take anyone who thinks this seriously.

Many have probably blocked or muted you TBH. I use LLM technology heavily, have a pretty good grasp of how it works, and I don’t see how anyone with that knowledge can claim this technology can yield consciousness. To me it’s like sticking googly eyes on a rock and then conversing with it.

I read the article. I can’t see anywhere where she actually says “bourgeois support”? It seems like an interpolation by the subeditor. I think Labour policy sucks, but this feels like bait by the Times rather than Mahmood actually telling people like me to eff off from the Labour Party.

I’ve worked in finance all my life and am a mathematician-cum-engineer by trade, but this obsession with quantifying the ultimate worth of everything in terms of market value drives me around the twist. Lazy, reductive, harmful.
