i didn't have room or time to write more fumecrux variants ( :( ) but at the very least, we have big blight on nature lizard to play with now :) and there's potential to write even more in the future! everyone watch out
a sentence from the monster lore for hellcrowns found in hellknight hill. it reads "When a Hellknight is decapitated, the ghostly undead known as a hellcrown is an occasional result."
the fumecrux came from a bit of lore from hellknight hill, a pf1e adventure path i was referencing for my work on hellbreakers. specifically, it was born from this snippet. the question that fueled this monster became "what if cheliax figured out how to do that on purpose with animal heads?"
oxen tend to be considered beasts of burden specifically for agriculture, so i felt it would be more fun to have a mechanical bull on a war field than a big horse. the explosive element was initially conceived as something for a last resort, but it's also fun to blow things up :P
a photo of the lascaux painting specifically featuring the aurochs. image from wikipedia
a photo of the mykonos vase featuring the trojan horse. image from wikipedia
both of these monsters were born from my challenging myself to write non-humanoid creatures that reflected how cheliax might employ explicitly for war. the aurocan was born from the question, "what if the trojan horse could blow up?" along with my personal enthusiasm for the aurochs 🐂
an image of the aurocan from paizo's hellbreakers adventure path. the aurocan is a mechanical six-legged bull whose head floats above the rest of its body.
an image of the draconic fumecrux from paizo's hellbreakers adventure path. the draconic fumecrux is a dragon-shaped monster with flames reflected in the back of its throat and neck. the rest of its body appears to be spectral.
hellbreakers came out a bit ago now, but i haven't done one of my "where did that thought come from" breakdowns in a while and paizo let me write two of my silliest ideas in that adventure path so... why not do a quick talk through about the aurocan and the fumecrux? :)
All hell breaks loose in this month's new releases! Brave the fires of adventure and emerge unscathed in the Pathfinder Adventure Path: Hellbreakers, Operation Hellmouth, A Pathfinder Novel, and more in today's blog: buff.ly/L7u0Br3

Sometimes the most radical thing you can do is educate normal people on complex subjects in ways that are engaging and digestible.

the title page of MAIDENHAIR. text reads: MAIDENHAIR a story about a plague and its vector. content warnings for this game include disease and associated terms, religious imagery, and death. please be advised before playing. how to play >>>
i'm already running behind on this, thanks to biting off a bit more than i could chew in 48 hours, oops.
MAIDENHAIR is a twine-based game hosted on my itch. inspired by the ginkgo tree's disease resistance and interchangeable spelling (gingko vs ginkgo).

WE ARE BEGINNING a character-exploration game for two players. you will need: - a writing implement. - one sheet of paper. - a dangerous question. you should each have one. - a d20. how to play: 1. each person claims a side of the same sheet of paper. write your dangerous question at the very bottom of the page. make sure the other person can't read it, either by physically blocking it or promising each other you won't peek. 2. roll a d20. ask your partner the corresponding clarifying question. when you are asked a question, do not answer out loud. write your answer on your side of the paper. 3. the second time you roll the same number, you can no longer ask clarifying questions. your partner may continue if they haven't rolled the same number yet. 4. when both of you cannot ask any more clarifying questions, look down at your initial question. will you ask it?
clarifying questions: 1. will this make me mad? 2. how often do you think about asking me this? 3. have you asked it of somebody else? 4. have you thought of asking me this before? 5. how long have you held onto this? 6. why did you start wondering this? 7. what about me has made you drop it before now? 8. have you asked me this before? 9. would you have asked it, without this prompting? 10. does my answer really matter? 11. is my answer or the existence of the question more important to you? 12. why do you have to ask me specifically this question? 13. has the existence of this question shaped any part of our relationship? 14. has anyone told you to ask me this? 15. where are we right now, and what about it makes you want to ask me this? 16. what would you do if i don't respond well? 17. what would you do if i respond well? 18. will you ask me this again in the future? 19. how do you expect me to react to this question? 20. how paradigm-shifting is this question? some notes: this game is meant to help explore already-made characters; ergo it does not come with a design phase. what dictates if a question is dangerous? the danger of a question relies on either your uncertainty in what its answer will be or your certainty of that. this question can be of a personal nature, but it doesn't have to be. when a star dies, it can do one of two things: explode into dust or simply go out.
WE ARE BEGINNING: a character-exploration game for two players. inspired by the death of a star + the song "in our bedroom after the war" by stars. alt text contains the plaintext.
a huevember 2025 graphic from cara. the colors are grouped into fifteen pairs: stars, gingko, pearl/carabara, lava, poppy, makeup, amethyst, magic, dusk, stibnite, dragonfly, sea, valley, foliage, and peridot.
i'm going to spend my january making microgames based on the most recent huevember prompts from cara in an effort to Lock In on game design this year! they won't be the most polished things in the world, but it should be a fun exercise :)

a poorly drawn wizard cat, wearing a pointed hat and holding a wand, floating diagonally
the wizard cat raises its wand as a magical burst begins to appear behind it, what could it be?
a magical cloud fills most of the frame, containing handwritten text that reads: “your 2026 will be awesome!”
the wizard cat appears very small and distant seen from behind with its little cape spread wide, creating a cheeky farewell after casting its spell
wizard cat has a very important message
roll 2d6. for the rest of the day, assume you have that number of fingers (1d6 per hand). tape fingers together if it helps the realism. bonus rule: bewilder your friends by asking for a high three/four/six as the situation calls for it
