Pup and I are getting ready for my last meeting as a regular member of NIH’s MSFB study section.

Excited to have @holdenthorp.bsky.social visit Virginia Tech for a talk on Maintaining & Communicating a Robust Scientific Record in an Age of AI & Social Media. He's also having coffee w/ our Presidential Postdocs & Research & Innovation Postdoc Scholars prior.

ATTENTION:
If you have received a NoA from NIH within the last 10 days, please let me know the grant number and award date.
I am trying to characterize the time lag between awards and NIH Reporter.
DM me if you wish or just reply
Are you aware of some that aren’t, other than the ones postponed during the initial communications freeze?
Stand Up for Science rallies will be held in DC and state capitals on March 7th. Share with friends. Sign-up here to get email updates with details: www.eventbrite.com/e/stand-up-f...
Well, I knit during the in-person meetings, too. Having something simple to do with my hands helps keep my brain focused. 🧶
Although I’m not a fan of NIH study sections on zoom, hanging out all day in comfy clothes with my dog is definitely a consolation prize. 🖤
He is without peer in using his platform to champion for a just world, on many fronts.
Meaning, there are plenty of women making great contributions, but the Swedes made the right call on this one, IMO. I say this as someone who works close to this field and as a huge supporter of women getting the recognition they deserve.
(Kidding, if that wasn’t obv)
Geez, Mark — way to pile on. 🙄
There are lots. 2 examples: Lynne Regan did some important early work, but moved into other areas. Tanja Kortemme (postdoc with Baker) works in protein design, though her work leans more to synbio. Baker’s contributions are most remarkable, tho, both for early leaps AND ongoing impact on the field.
He was my postdoc advisor. Amazing scientist, teacher and mentor.
Ditto for the genome sequencers, who gave us all the homologous sequences for alignments!
My lab has shown that synonymous codon usage can help sculpt protein structure: pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...
Love that paper! Did you take that class with Jonathan King, by any chance?

Super happy for this help from NIH Director Monica Bertagnolli, getting the word out about our new study in PNAS, showing surprising new effects of synonymous codon substitutions on the expression of the gene "next door"!

I wish there was more credit to people who were the thin end of the wedge. The “First Black faculty in the University,” “First woman in the department,” “First blind person to get a doctorate in the institution,” and on and on. They made it easier for everyone to follow.
Applications are open for Max Planck Research Group Leaders! An amazing opportunity to build an independent research group with ~3M€ guaranteed support over 6 years. Bonus: You can choose your favorite Max Planck Institute, including ours www.bio.mpg.de/50783/about-us

Thanks, Joey!
My department seeks to hire a new tenure-track assistant professor in computational biophysics, broadly defined, to complement and grow Notre Dame's existing biophysics community. Please share -- and consider applying!

Jane Richardson's impact on protein science is amazing. Her development of ribbon diagrams, discussed here, is only ONE of her seminal contributions. ❤️

Do you know outstanding undergraduate researchers who could use up to $750 in travel funding to present research at the Spring ACS National Meeting or PITTCON?
Please encourage them to apply for the Kolthoff awards! Deadline is Jan. 8, 2024.
