The Columbine massacre was on this date in 1999. Instead of energizing our country to get gun violence under control, it kicked off a new normal. One of the best explanations ever of journalism's destructive impact on mass shootings came from Roger Ebert in his review of Gus Van Sant’s “Elephant.”

It’s amazing how they manage to do that, isn’t it? Ours is 55lbs and I swear he can make himself weigh a thousand when you want him to move.

House Judiciary Dems will soon launch an investigation on this.

Stay tuned.

It’s wild to me that he got confirmed before he divested.

There are decades of allegations about the cozy relationship between the airlines & the FAA but this is truly beyond the pale. Its quite remarkable that Bedford has gotten away with this.

It was a pretty funny typo!

The Appeal will be heard next month. If (when!) we win again, only then do I get to try & recover my legal fees.

I honestly don’t know why the suit was brought. Maybe people just hate to read the truth about themselves or their business.

Being a reporter is hard as hell, tho. It’s so hard.

They didn’t want to believe that statements from, for example, the FAA are actual official statements from the government. (They wanted these statements, in FAA communications, tossed out.)

Still, it me cost a TON of money to argue this point. And it’s exhausting.

I won in 2024; they appealed. /2

The lawsuit against me claimed my article caused losses of $74 million for the Plaintiff. They said I lied & also used stolen docs in my reporting.

When I presented the docs I actually used - from the FAA, DOT, etc., the Plaintiff was stunned. They didn’t know (I guess) how reporting worked. /1

Should read “The Atlantic’s”.

Sigh.

It seems to me that any government official who sues for defamation should be required to pay attorneys' fees x 3 plus costs if they drop the case, and x 5 if they lose.

As a reporter who was very recently thru The Atlantis fact-checking process, I’m gonna say Patel has no idea who he’s dealing with.

The thing that concerns me more than gasoline is heating. We can car pool in a pinch, but we can’t share stove oil or diesel generated electricity. There’s only so much dry wood around, and little of it is close by.

The eyewitness. How a prison fire and a charismatic inmate revealed a waiting audience for compelling radio news on CBS.

To mark the passing of CBS News Radio, I wrote about how it began—with a forgotten broadcast from a Black prison inmate.

I came across this incredible story while researching my biography of Edward R. Murrow, and you can read all about it @columjournreview.bsky.social. 🗃️

This should alarm the hell out of the Sullivan campaign in Alaska.

If Lower 48 averages are at $3, the price in rural AK is more like $6 -$10. And don’t even get me started on airfare and air freight up there.

A dirt bike is faster, a 4-wheeler is faster, a ton of animals are faster, hell - a helicopter is faster. None of them need roads.

I get there’s a niche but this just doesn’t seem like something we need robots for - or that we need to have major media cover.

In case any of you wondered how much gas costs in rural Alaska.

I really don't understand the point of this. A train is faster than humans. A car is faster than humans. A horse is faster than humans. A cheetah is faster than humans. Why spend money making something for this purpose?

Misconduct cases at Hillsborough sheriff’s office spur culture questions Academic cheating, domestic violence and a major accused of drinking on duty have rocked the agency.

Academic cheating, multiple domestic abuse & stalking cases, a major who showed up for work drunk -- all these happened at one #Florida sheriff's department, but those in charge swear everything is FINE. www.tampabay.com/news/hillsbo... via @tampabaytimes.bsky.social

Say what you want about the Catholic concept of confession, but it's vastly superior to the "Don't worry everyone, I personally talked to God and he said all the cheating I did on my wife is forgiven."
