Monkey auditory neurons "did not show enhanced responses to unexpected stimulus repetitions, contrary to predictive-coding theory. However, they did show enhanced responses to unexpected stimulus omissions." www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Happy #MicroscopyMonday everyone! 🔬To celebrate February we have a beautiful image from Char and shows a stunning view of the synapses of the inner hair cells in a 3-day-old mouse.🐁👂In this snapshot CtBP2, in red, labels the presynaptic ribbons and PSD95, in green, labels the postsynaptic sites.✨🧪
📢Howdy all, just two weeks until the deadline of this PhD opportunity within the hearing group! Please share around as much as possible. This exciting project within the Carlton lab would be a great fit for someone interested in sensory neuroscience!👂🧠

🧠🪰 The adult Drosophila brain connectome now gives us a complete wiring diagram of ~140k neurons. But a wiring diagram alone isn’t understanding.
How is this massive network organized?
Our paper tackles that question by mapping community structure across the entire fly brain. 1/
We must adapt to protect our future.

Join us in Sheffield! We are keen to support early career researchers in applying for independent research fellowships (IRFs) to join our friendly and collaborative environment, in areas related to developmental biology, stem cells and regenerative biology, and neuroscience.
Happy #MicroscopyMonday everyone! 🌟🔬 Here’s an image from Ivy of outer hair cells (OHCs) and inner hair cells (IHCs) from a P20 mouse.. 🐁✨#Microscopy #HearingResearch #Cochlea #Neuroscience #Neuroskyence
We've had a busy few weeks as we have returned from an amazing Inner Ear Biology conference in Tübingen!👂 It was inspiring to hear cutting-edge research and disseminate our own—Adam, Alice, and Char gave talks, while Ginny, Federico, Yan, and Andrea presented their latest work in poster sessions!🧑🔬🧪

JWST just released a new image of the red planet!
Just kidding, this is an image of the organ of Corti stained red that I've badly photoshopped 👩🚀 Have a great weekend all!
📝 We have a new paper out! Headed by Dr Federico Ceriani, this paper shows that machine-learning can be used to detect early signs of hearing loss, and can also predict the future progression of hearing loss in 6N and 6N-repaired mice! 🧪🦻

🧠 Are you a basic scientist with 12 minutes to spare?
This is your final reminder to take our survey on public engagement.
The survey is closing soon on 8 June. Make your voice heard!

Adam giving his talk, and hand gesturing. On his slide there is an image and some information about the an area of the brainstem called the lateral superior olivocochlear nucleus (LSO). The photo was taken amongst the audience.
Charlie giving his talk and pointing to images of the organ of Corti on the screen. The photo was taken right in front of him.
This week we’ve had Adam and Charlie presenting to the public at @pintofscience.uk in the Sheffield Tap! They talked about how we hear and shared some of their research, too 😊.

I couldn’t sign this quick enough.
Please consider doing the same if you are at all concerned about what is happening to science in the US, and Elon Musk’s role in it, and believe that he is not fit for recognition as a Fellow of the Royal Society 🧪 🌎
We used cleanBib in our paper here: www.nature.com/articles/s41... (see the References section of our Methods)

- Definitely made me think harder about which papers I was citing!
Could I be added please? Thanks!
From not being able to find people within auditory research to not being able to follow up on notifications. This is fantastic! So nice to see this community growing! Do not hesitate to contact me if you want want to be added to this list, particularly young/early career peeps.

I would like to be added too please! Here's some noise 🤪...
I made a systems neuroscience starter pack, focused on experimentalists who study the brain at the level of populations of neurons!
Also want to be on the list? Reply or DM me a picture of your ephys rig or 2p setup and I'll add you 🤭

Super excited that this paper is now “in print” in Scientific Reports:

Two photos of Anna, a young white woman using an electric wheelchair, wearing a blue lab coat that fits her well with tables and dry-lab equipment in the background. Text reads: "A team of researchers and designers led by UCL is looking for wheelchair users working in wet lab environments to user-test what is believed to be the first-ever prototype of a lab coat adapted for wheelchair users."
Do you know a UK-based wheelchair user who works in a lab and would be willing to user-test our prototype of what is believed to be the first-ever lab coat adapted for wheelchair users?

Happy #MicroscopyMonday !📷 Here we have a gorgeous image from an old Master's student, Laia Mas Marquez, showing inner hair cell stereocilia (green) with EPS8 (red) highlighting their tips. EPS8 is key in regulating stereocilia length and ensuring proper localization of other essential proteins.

We experience the world through a multitude of senses, and yet most studies of sensory perception focus on one sensory modality at a time. Our paper on how odors affect sound processing in now published in Journal of Neuroscience (1/5). www.jneurosci.org/content/44/4...
