Admittedly, Musk and Iain Banks' "The Culture" series is up there. The whole point is that technology *doesn't* bring utopia, it's choosing to be anarcho-communists that does, and the tech comes later. Also everyone in the Culture is transing their gender recreationally all the time.

i love Ace Combat for putting so much effort into licencing real-world aircraft and modelling them with painstaking detail, only to get to the second half of the game and go "ok now its time for our plane: the Sleipnir X-5000" and it looks like an SR-71 Blackbird designed by Sephiroth

In the alternate Rutan-verse he came from, that's just what normal planes look like, it's all he knows. To Burt, we're the freaks.

Very limited downward visibility to operate the chin gun, at least through the windows. Are they doing the F35 thing where they can see "through" the body of the vehicle thanks to the helmet-mounted display?

I like that the 2nd gunship is also "no glass," but in a very different sense.

Ah, so not so much "the terms are fine but people have their definitions backwards," but more "we shouldn't be describing things in those terms at all"?

Am I mistaken in thinking that sentience refers to sensation, sensory capacity, while sapience refers to problem-solving capacity? And that both are not the same as consciousness, having subjective experience or qualia?

I'm really impressed by the jank. I have a hard time with designs that aren't optimized or intentional from the start, but so much in real life, and so much of what's interesting, is refits and adaptations that weren't originally intended, and this provides some great examples

When I first saw gameplay of Armored Core 6 my thought was "wait, so they can fly in any direction, and even when moving at ground level they're almost always hovering, not actually walking? Isn't that an attack helicopter game?"

Obviously not the point or focus, but I love the sound of the Neo-Socialist-Mujahideen and the United Lunar Lava Tube Large Spiders Union.

Digital art drawing of Jupiter's moons as if seen from Jupiter's cloud tops. Swirling brown and tan clouds in a blue sky frame four small lumpy asteroids and four large spherical moons. Io has yellow and white regions with glowing red volcanoes and the plume of erupting volcanoes visible on the limb. Europa is white and tan, criss-crossed with brown cracks. Ganymede is brown, gray, and white, and Callisto is brown with tiny white craters. Io appears by far the largest--twice as big as Europa and Ganymede, which are about the same apparent size. Callisto is then half the size of those. The minor asteroid moons: Metis, Adrastea, Amalthea, and Thebe; are elliptical lumps much smaller than Callisto.

Commission for @zinzrinz.bsky.social of all of Jupiter's Moons, as seen from the cloud tops, with the correct relative apparent sizes for each of the Galilean moons and the inner four asteroid moons.
