The Shah's brutal repression torture, secret police, 26 years of autocracy radicalized the very clerics the CIA had empowered. In 1979 Khomeini's revolution swept them all away. The hostage crisis followed. Then sanctions. Then maximum pressure. Then this war. We handed them the match in 1953.

In 1953 Iran had a functioning democracy. A free press. Seven political parties. Women in universities. Women granted voting rights in municipal councils in 1952. A secular prime minister named Mosaddegh who believed Iran's oil belonged to Iran. The US and Britain decided he had to go.

Do I think Trump will actually nuke Iran? No, and if he tried I think it is likelier than not that his generals, etc would refuse such an order. But at the point the President starts threatening to wipe out a people is the point at which you must take his threats seriously.

I think it's bad for the President to threaten to annihilate an entire culture and i do not think you are being alarmist if you take his threats seriously and literally.
