NDOT to begin final season of 2-year US-50 repaving project between Spooner and Tahoe On April 27, the Nevada Department of Transportation will launch the second and final season of a two-year project to repave U.S. 50 between Spooner Summit and the Nevada/California border at Lake Tahoe. During the first construction season in 2025, crews paved five and a half miles of U.S. 50 through the Stateline casino corridor to just south of Cave Rock, including new highway surface through the Stateline casino corridor.

Motorists will see traffic changes April 27 through October 2026 as crews pave and improve the remaining section of highway during the project’s final construction season.

Investigation leads to arrest of Gardnerville man for suspected cocaine trafficking On Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at approximately 5:45 a.m., the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office SWAT executed a search warrant in the 1200 block of Alicia Circle in the Gardnerville Ranchos, Gardnerville, Nev. The search warrant was the culmination of a two-month investigation into suspected cocaine trafficking by Branden Michael Kennon, 46, who resides at the Alicia Circle address. Kennon was booked into the Minden Jail Facility on three counts of sale of a controlled substance, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail was set at $20,646.

The search warrant was the culmination of a two-month investigation into suspected cocaine trafficking.

Carson City area weather: Gusty winds, valley showers and Sierra snow ahead Gusty winds, valley rain and mountain snow return to Carson City and surrounding counties Tuesday and Wednesday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Storm Watch for Lake Tahoe and Sierra for Tuesday and Wednesday. Winds will become gusty beginning Monday bringing a Lake Wind Advisory to the region. NWS forecasters says winds will be out of the southwest 20 mph to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

Commissioners name undersheriff Lee Orozco as Churchill County Sheriff At their special meeting Friday, Churchill County Commissioners named Lee Orozco as the new County Sheriff, filling the position left by the untimely passing of Sheriff Richard Hickox on April 11, 2026. Tenth District Court Judge Tom Stockard administered the oath to Sheriff Orozco before a room filled with local law enforcement agency representatives and the Hickox family showing their support for the appointment.

Sheriff Orozco has been with Churchill County for 30 years and served as the undersheriff to Sheriff Hickox since 2022.

NHP: One dead, three injured in wreck on US-50 near Lake Tahoe The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that happened Sunday morning on US-50 near State Route 28. US-50 is closed in both directions between State Route 28 and Glenbrook Road. The closure is expected for three to four hours. At around 4:47 a.m., NHP responded to the two-vehicle crash on US-50 at Douglas County mile marker 11, located between State Route 28 and Glenbrook Road. NHP reports one confirmed fatality. Three others were taken to a local area hospital with serious injuries. We will update as information becomes available.

More earthquakes rattle region Sunday morning southwest of Silver Springs Seismic activity continues Sunday with a 4.5 magnitude earthquake centered 11 miles southwest of Silver Springs and 20 miles northeast of Yerington happening at 7:39 a.m., according to the Nevada Seismological Survey. There was a 4.2 quake earlier this morning at 5:43 a.m. according to the Nevada Seismological Lab and U.S. Geological Survey. At this time there are no immediate reports of damage or injuries from these two earthquakes Sunday.

Emergency response after paraglider goes down near Foothill Road in Douglas County East Fork Fire Protection District, Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Search and Rescue responded Saturday morning to a report of a paraglider that crashed off Foothill Road. The emergency staging area is near David Walley's Hot Springs. The incident was reported just after 10 a.m. The paraglider was spotted on a steep and rocky outcropping, according to first responders. Rescue teams are attempting to hike to the downed paraglider and a helicopter rescue team has been notified. Injuries are unknown at this time. We will update as information becomes available.

Vehicle collides into Carson City apartment, no injuries but heavy damage to unit On Friday, April 17, the Carson City Fire Department responded to a vehicle that crashed into a building at 1600 Airport Rd, Bella Lago Apartments. Significant structural damage required a shoring operation to stabilize the building. No one was inside at the time, and no injuries were reported. The affected apartment is uninhabitable and the American Red Cross is assisting the tenant.
