astronomy_ins LDN 1471: A Wind-Swept Stellar Cavity

What causes this unusual parabolic structure? This illuminated cavity, known as LDN 1471, was created by a newly formed star, seen as the bright source at the apex of the parabola. The protostar then experienced a stellar outburst that interacted with surrounding matter in the Perseus Molecular Cloud, brightening it. We only see one side of the cavity, the other side is obscured by dark dust. The parabolic shape is due to the gap being opened up by the stellar wind, and expanding over time. Two separate structures known as Herbig-Haro objects, also caused by the outflow interacting with surrounding matter, are also visible on either side of the protostar. But what causes the striations in the walls of the cavity remains unknown. This image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope following an initial detection by the Spitzer Space Telescope.
