I suspect that this may have something to do with Japan having a more collectivist society. Had this occurred in the more individualistic Western societies, the headline might very well have been to do with that of an executive’s pay rise, despite such happenings.

Wish I had the expertise to try to better understand how a general consensus amongst medical professionals like that of the mysterious brain illness case goes unchallenged for so long. Is it due to lack of clinical curiosity, confirmation/anchoring bias, overreliance on heuristics…?

Sadly, this reminds me of post-arthroplasty patients who were misdiagnosed with dementia prior to the discovery that metallosis from chrome-cobalt components were the common denominator, leading to the onset of “Arthroplastic Cobalt Encephalopathy.” Imagine all of those who went without revision.
