If it was the filter, was it explicitly outlined as such in the course description?
I’m sure it stopped any concerns about meeting the language requirements!
I’ve heard similar things. Or places with direct admission to the PhD with the expectation that MA requirements are met along the way (and the possibility of “mastering out” if the department is not convinced of potential). Not sure how coursework etc. works in such cases.
On the other hand, at this point in time, it’s hard to recommend a two-year MA as a prerequisite to a six- or seven-year PhD program
The loss of FLAS is going to have a terrible impact on this infrastructure. Ugh.
Pretty much my case as well, though the “funding” was a TAship
Princeton is a great example. MA not *required* for PhD admission, but offhand I can only think of one or two people who were admitted straight from BA.
My gut feeling is that it’s pretty rare for the MA to be an actual requirement for PhD admission, but common in practice to do an MA first to be competitive or just to test the waters
I’m curious about MAs in East Asian Studies. If you have a PhD or are working on one, did you get a standalone MA first? Was it required for admission to your PhD program?

I hope you have better luck integrating Asian Studies into K-12 in Canada than we are having down here. The cancellation of National Resource Center grants is stopping valuable outreach work by universities.

so cool that when Kurosawa made Seven Samurai, he was like, "What if a movie absolutely ripped for three-and-a-half hours straight?"

Have you tried the stock Preview app?

I would probably just assign this Hank Green video. Bonus: many undergrads will already know who Hank Green is.
Looking forward to reading this one, Peng Xu’s new book The Courtesan’s Memory, Voice, and Late Ming Drama (U Mich Press)
They shouldn't be anxious! Our ad calls for "Native or near-native proficiency in Mandarin Chinese and English," which sounds to me like either way would be fine. Meaning, professional duties would require adequate levels of both for teaching and research.
...suggestions?
U of Arizona East Asian Studies is hiring a tenure-track Chinese Language Program director! I'm happy to answer any questions about it, the department, Tucson, etc. Please circulate widely:
