"My son always texts to say he's on his way home. So I open the door, letting his 17 year old cat, and 16 year old doggo know that he's on his way. This is them waiting for him. Though it was adorable, and wanted to share." ❤️

Looks like the chairs have bred since we got married there in 2009!

A large white waterfowl with orange feet stands in front of a door. On the door is a cardboard sign secured with tape that reads, "DO NOT LET THE DUCK IN."

Adding insult to injury, I think the duck might be a goose.

Finest contemporary stained glass window ever made: #genius

I was taken there once and behind that huge Georgian painted door was an elegant gallery, the full width of the building with a pair of huge fireplaces (circular) symmetrically placed on either side of the great hall entrance. Doesn’t get much more Pepys than that!!

Has a definite Trinity Dublin vibe…., but does it have a pair of matching fire places either side of the entrance?

Better than the head resting on the hand fad…. To quote Webster: “as if they died of the Toothache….” !!

A really nice surprise was the multi storey car park (yes, seriously!!) it is split into tapering wings with a slither of natural woodland landscape between them. Absolutely wonderful to park in the tree tops…. Surrounded by green and birdsong. I did a zoom call from the car and it was beautiful!

Sorry to hear that: I really like the old campus - still pretty authentic (albeit with more mature trees now) but the newer bits are less successful for me with a couple of notable exceptions. Have been working with them for a couple of months on future strategy which is an interesting challenge!

Fantastic: Hopkins was a superb architect and his buildings rarely disappoint….. these look very calm and respectful, which was one of his great skills. Spent Tuesday going through the books of his work showing a young colleague how wonderful his staircases are!!

Wow…. Those trees have really got established now and it’s become a different setting I guess…. Buildings in a wooded landscape as opposed to splendid isolation.
Not better or worse, just different
Awesome campus though- love it!!

I beg to differ…. Happy to report that All has faired pretty well at that end of campus on a recent visit 😊

Went for an explore near Droitwich today and saw Westwood House for the first time and wow: simply stunning. An early adoption of the Butterfly plan which makes perfect sense when you see it in situ, with set piece views to every point of the compass. What a building!!

Slightly troubling moments at last night’s bell ringing practice…. Driven rain hitting the west window and leaking through the lead cames to run down the inside face of the glass!

Me too….. A badge of honour I think!!

Researching elegant round staircases and I spotted a building I didn’t know in Sherborne…. The Pilkington Labs at the School by Sir Michael Hopkins no less…... And as Sherborne is synonymous with @gretellemaitre.bsky.social I feel obliged to share my discovery and hope she won’t be too dismissive😊

Very proud of my colleagues!
An ambitious restoration and remodelling of the Grade I Listed Sinfonia Smith Square has received Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent. The project will safeguard the Hall’s future and realise a bold new artistic vision.

NEWS: C20 has submitted a listing application for the River & Rowing Museum in Henley, Oxfordshire (1989-97), which closed in Sept 2025. The David Chipperfield-designed building is an exceptional example of late 20th century contextual Modernist architecture.

I can help there - as the rare combination of architect and bell ringer!
The hole was indeed for the bell and they would mirror the diameter of the tenor bell very closely- often only with an inch to spare. It also solves the problem of the centre of the vault - avoiding the hardest bit to build!

You are a kind mouse and I do love that mouse-eye view!!
As a designer it is really counterintuitive with the main ridge lines not having a rib, but I wonder if this was empirically a strong point anyway and a daring mason simple decided to omit it: radical stuff!!

It is rather special…. I even had a go at a quick sketch - not my best, but got me looking at the vault which is remarkably innovative! Spent ages trying to figure out the geometry under the tower…. See my workings out 😊
