I’ve actually made friends with some people I wouldn’t have otherwise met; a few of us even met up to go skating on the canal last year.
Like most social media, Mastodon is what you make of it… though Faine is right and I wish it was easier and less reply-guy-prone to make something enjoyable there!

I ended up hosting my own, super local mastodon server (ottawa.place) and it’s been great. The bigger servers don’t really appeal to me, and having a server explicitly focused on “people that are local (and you might run into at the grocery store)” has been super nice!

Once they add the Bluesky-inspired "Packs" feature (blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/10/our-...), I think it'll be easier to onboard people... though as an admin of my own server, I'll freely admit that my opinion is still fairly coloured by my experience.

Though, Mastodon is just now fixing two of the larger pain-points for the average person in v4.5.0, IMO: it supports quote posts, and fetches replies from other servers (so you don't have the "some replies to posts on other servers are invisible" issue that trips up so many people.
