Quick PSA: Joan is a real name. It’s not even an odd or unusual one.
It’s not Jone. It’s not Joanne.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve told someone my name out loud and they either spell it “Jone” or they correctively address me as “Joanne.”
I know this is not important. But it’s just weird.
Donald Trump threatened to jail journalists who published details of a daring US military raid to rescue two airmen whose aircraft was shot down over Iran

Really appreciated being included in this! Heat coverage is an ever-evolving thing these days.

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.
“Grasping the feeling of dread, of misplaced—or foregone—humanity is a failed hunt for meaning,” wrote Zarina Zabrisky at the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “There is no meaning in war.”
Thank you. I don’t dispute the need to point out where coverage is lacking. But that should include highlighting where climate coverage already does exist, so that our efforts are read, supported, and can continue at a time when climate journalism is more needed and more threatened than ever before.
Feels like there’s a pattern of prominent climate scientists/directors, etc. using their platforms to complain about news media omitting climate context while ignoring stories that include it (btw, climate journalist positions are vanishing).
If you want to fix a gap, maybe lift up existing fixes?
Dropping Lake Powell levels are forcing one of its largest remaining marinas to relocate to stay in water.

Had a great conversation with @joanmeiners.bsky.social about communicating climate change and heat waves.
Good timing as I just received a 7-day extreme heat warning for northern Arizona where we've already been experiencing temps 15-20 degrees above normal www.azcentral.com/story/news/l...
It's very likely that an oil shock helped to crater housing production in the 1970s and could be about to do so again. publiccomment.blog/p/the-housin...
Oh damn…I’m tempted actually.
This is a pretty great job! Ask me how I know
This is what ecocide looks like.
This is so relatable for me!
"We have 75% of Americans who know climate change is happening. You're not gonna lose viewers. You're going to earn people's trust and respect by making this a more important area of coverage. I hope conversations like this help reporters who are still there get stories on."

This is a vital conversation about trends in #climate news coverage that people NEED to hear.
@emorwee.bsky.social, Tracy Wholf & @chasecain.bsky.social (who was great to work with on our 2024 interview of John Podesta for @coveringclimatenow.org) are indispensable.

EXCLUSIVE: Trump’s Orwellian Board of Peace Consists Entirely of Human Rights Abusers
An Intercept analysis finds that every single Board of Peace member state has been rebuked for human rights violations.

I set out to write about fluctuating electricity rates at Arizona utilities today & ended up also covering the final repeal of AZ’s renewable energy standard, passed ~4pm.
The sunniest state in the nation no longer has any benchmark goal for solar energy. Dark day.

Good article, but the framing is wrong. There is not a dearth of interest in taxonomy. There is a scarcity of funding and positions, which is a deliberate choice by funding agencies and institutions. The youth love taxonomy! It's the olds that are failing to meet their passion!
Love this one
The Supreme Court has decided to hear a major climate case against fossil fuel companies
Alito has not recused himself, despite owning nearly $200,000 in fossil fuel stocks—including in Phillips 66 and ConocoPhillips, which are being sued in cases that would be directly affected by a SCOTUS ruling
Touched on that in my story yesterday!

I wrote a story about a bill to fund maintenance of the #ArizonaTrail, which crosses nearly every category of #publiclands on its 850-mile journey btw Utah & Mexico -- and what in-state support for it might mean against a backdrop of federal attacks on public lands.
