Google recovers "deleted" Nest video in high-profile abduction case Users only get three hours of free Nest video storage, but Google can retrieve videos much later.

“…this is something to keep in mind if you’re using a Google camera. Even if you aren’t paying for storage, every event recorded by the camera is going to Google’s servers, and it’s probably recoverable long past the deletion timeline stipulated in the company’s policy.”

Amazon Found ‘High Volume’ Of Child Sex Abuse Material in AI Training Data The tech giant reported hundreds of thousands of cases of suspected child sexual abuse material, but won’t say where it came from

Please tell anyone who cheers on the big AI companies that LLMs are including sexually explicit images of children in their training data. None of them seem to care except Amazon. Yet Amazon won’t talk about what it’s doing about it. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

WaPo’s tech desk was one of the best in the business, and I relied on @nitasha.bsky.social’s reporting countless times in my work. Journalists like her and others laid off today were a source of vital insights into SV politics, helping us in the EU understand who and what we’re facing

So here’s a quick thread to help.

Last term I tried an experiment: I walked into my Tech and Design Ethics class, admitted that I had *no idea* what to do about ChatGPT - so I would let them figure it out.

As in: their first project was to decide and write the ChatGPT policy for the class.

Mounting debt crisis means global South governments are spending on average 15% of their revenue servicing external debt. This figure has doubled since 2010.

More than 3.4 billion people now live in countries that spend more on interest payments than on health or education.
