When we lived in Germany, our neighbors got on our case for being “bad Germans” because we didn’t hang our duvet out the open window once a week!

I really love that change, so I updated all of my course materials to call them RICE tables.

I was telling my 14 yo daughter about this and she said, "well that was a missed opportunity. You should've called them F-ICE tables (Formula, Initial, Change, Reaction)

During the chemical equilibria section in gen chem, students learn to construct ICE tables (Initial, Change, Equilibria) to predict the extent of a reversible chemical reaction.

With everything happening, a student suggested we call them RICE tables instead (Reaction, Initial, Change, Equilibria).

The effort to explicitly protect NCAR during the appropriations process has, unfortunately, been unsuccessful. For now, NCAR is still operating as usual. While the future remains uncertain, and disappointingly entwined with partisan political retribution, the broader fight continues.

During the interwar period (c. 1918-1939) universities were in economic crisis, rising authoritarianism, ideological polarization & global instability. Sound familiar? What did successful academic leaders do? 🧵⬇️

NCAR’s Mesa Lab is literally a science castle dedicated to understanding our planet in an open and collaborative way, and leading the world in that effort. We cannot let this happen.

It’s simply not possible to overstate how important NCAR is to US and world science. We need to fight this with everything we’ve got.

Trump team plans to break up ‘global mothership’ of climate science Much of the National Center for Atmospheric Research’s non-climate portfolio will be dispersed, the White House says.

Here's our reporting on the proposed dismantling of the jewel of US atmospheric science, @ncar-ucar.bsky.social.

The plan is to break NCAR apart and disburse some parts to other locations (like the research aircraft fleet) and eliminate others.

You can do this right now:

Think of a person who wrote a paper you love, whose work influenced or helped you, or has made your professional life better.

Search up their email address. Shoot them a quick email of thanks. It means so, so much. This is a rough time of year, share some joy.

I feel for all my friends and colleagues with federal jobs having to face the even greater madness and uncertainty because of this impending shutdown. 🫣

Colorado Front Range had the fewest number of air quality alerts in 15 yrs, per RAQC. Mostly driven by an overall cooler summer, but citizen choices are making a difference too.

The global pledge for healthy indoor air: That clean indoor air is a fundamental human right for protecting health and safeguarding well-being

The momentum for clean indoor air continues to build. I attended the inaugural High-Level Side Event on indoor air quality at the UN General Assembly yesterday. Short remarks by Lidia Morawska @joeallenjoe.bsky.social @isiaq.bsky.social Pres. Kerry Kinney, ASHRAE, WHO, UNEP, many others.

Wonderful that San Diego has recognized @kprather.bsky.social for such important work showing the source of disgusting water & air pollution. The story of their investigation is fascinating like a crime novel, tho also tragic & maddening. today.ucsd.edu/story/tijuan...

Congrats on the named day! 🎉

I’m teaching an undergrad #AerosolScience course & highlighting real-world #careers. Looking for people who work in a job that heavily involves #aerosols in any broadly defined way for students to interview. Could be any aspect of aerosols: industry, engineering, medicine, etc. Want to help? DM me!

Also worth noting this was already very late (11:15 pm Mountain time), so many fireworks were long since launched, but the residual aerosol hung heavy over all the metro areas for hours.

It’s always interesting to see the effect of fireworks on urban air quality. This is a simple snapshot of the #PurpleAir maps in U.S. and Europe tonight, with a bonus of the Colorado Front Range thrown in for good measure. Serious PM concentrations, as always on the 4th of July. Stay healthy!
