📢 The Alliance is calling on the new government to expand the #CommunityWealthFund and return it to the campaign’s original principles, by targeting the doubly disadvantaged communities that need it most. 🧵4/4

The #CommunityWealthFund was legislated for, but not yet finalised, by the previous govt before the general election was called and parliament was dissolved.

This means that key details on the CWF’s design and delivery remain unresolved. 🧵3/4

Programmes such as @localtrust.bsky.social's Big Local prove that trusting local residents to make decisions about their area works, and this should be replicated with the Community Wealth Fund.

The funding should be long-term, over a 10-15 year period, with a focus on capacity building to build residents’ confidence in project plans and grant applications. Local residents know what their area needs best, and communities need to be trusted with the funding.

The money would come from the dormant assets fund, and around £1million should go to communities of no more than 10,000 residents. This amount of money is the right amount to get members of the community involved, and can make a lasting difference.

Communities that are the most deprived on the CNI lack vital social infrastructure and have missed out on funding for decades. These pockets of deprivation are often overlooked when it comes to funding, and cannot bid for funding pots, so continue to miss out.

What is a community wealth fund?

A Community Wealth Fund should be place-based, long-term, community-led funding for the most deprived communities around England according to the Community Needs Index (CNI).
