A Hungarian postal stamp, showing a clown upside down juggling many different coloured hoops, with the text “CIRCUSZ 1965” and 2,50 forint
Yeah it definitely warped his career. I think for him though it was less the burning out of other people (I don't think there was as much churn on the labour side as the tory one) and more he got to do a job in Shadow Brexit Secretary that played to his strengths and hid his weaknesses
and yet here you are arguing with George about what he wants to argue about
Or, hear me out, we're arguing about *exactly* the thing we're arguing about, and not just because it's not your topic of choice
Assuming Kash's lawsuit gets past the motion to dismiss stage, the DISCOVERY in this case is going to be WILD.
To be fair France is a country with no coal, gas or oil. So it's no surprising they're the one country to really make a go of nuclear power
Why would Foreign Sec and PM choose to know none of the most important info about their most important diplomatic appointment?
IMO - they sensed it would be embarrassing for Mandelson & so wanted distance / ignorance. When that is exactly why they should have made sure they knew.
accidently listened to Girls On Film, and actually its good
Wonder what the State Department’s genocide lawyer does these days.
don’t disagree and my post didn’t say racism / nationalism is exclusively US/UK
Thanks! Very interesting, though some of elements aren’t surprising. Maybe it’s the combination of ideology *and economic power* that leads to UK false choices . GR, BG & RO are in EU and most other “superior cultures” would be (on a referendum) if they could be.
Only the New York Times, run by a fourth-generation nepo baby for an imagined audience of other elites with Roman numerals after their names, could treat such a small-bore common-sense tax proposal as the peak sign of a class war.
If this is the peak of the "anti-rich current," they'll be lucky.
I do feel bad for all the legitimately good tech people out there catching strays over this, but let’s make sure we’re keeping our eyes on the “genuine threat of technofascism” ball
the thing about our current moment is that yes, the anti-AI and anti-big tech people are getting very reactive nowadays - but have you seen what they’re *reacting* to?
“we’re special” narrative in UK / US goes beyond loving the specifics to a false belief of inherent *superiority*. In each state it’s grounded in the racism of colonialism and empire.
I’d be interested to see comparative opinion poll data. Whatever it is about “our country” has led to very different results in UK - and US - than pretty much every other state, which have not rejected regional integration.
This is correct and I would further say that leftwing exceptionalism is one of the most bizarre things I've seen, anywhere. The UK is not exceptionally bad, good, this or that. Bizarre to think otherwise.
Typing this in heart of West End amongst tourists enjoying England. UK has a great deal to give the world if it’s foreign policy can accept it’s just another middle sized rich country
Absolutely! Exceptionalism dominates across all axes : left / right, authoritarian/ liberal, nationalist & internationalist.
Failure to challenge it and create alternative narratives is IMO central failure of British political life.

A display in the street advertising a coffee shop. On the display of our pictures of drinks described as Pink Chai, Matcha Latte, Turmeric Latte and Blue Matcha.
the retail crimes Khan should be addressing
Since referendum no leader of any British* party has addressed British exceptionalism. Because they all agree with it? Approach seems to be to wait for enough of its adherents to die out. Failure of leadership.
*Don’t @ me “English exception’m”. A predominantly English trope, but label fits for now
Problem is that British exception’m is so engrained, the only worse-off scenarios ppl could conceive were that Brussels bureaucrats would try and impose paperwork, but Brits would triumph, because we always do

A move *critics* say targets LGBTQI+ households?
For those keeping track at home. The Iranians have now blockaded the Strait of Hormuz in response to the US blockading it because the Iranians had blockaded it, in response to the US attacking Iran to ensure that the Strait which was fully open at the time wasn't blockaded.
Bowles on William Burroughs's claim that he didn't remember writing Naked Lunch: "He ought to remember it. It was all over the floor. There were hundreds of pages of yellow foolscap all over the floor, month after month, with heelprints on them, rat droppings, bits of old sandwiches, sardines..."
A large crowd as always at the weekly march in Tbilisi. Georgians have been protesting in 8+ cities every day for the last 507 days.
For the first time in decades, consensus broke at the UN Commission on the Status of Women. The United States cast the lone “no” vote on a document aimed at improving justice systems for women and girls worldwide. Misogyny is the official policy of the US under Trump.
