❤️ we met briefly presenting in the same session at ASPC 2023. you were one of few attendees calling out classism in the academy and the extractive impacts research can have on participants! so just from knowing of your work from afar, it's obvious that you have integrity in spades ❤️

nothing but utmost solidarity with and support for @drdemography.com, who is one of the most principled scholars in this country — and shows up as such, even at great personal cost !!! an inspiration, and only more so today. to be *in* the academy does not require you to be *of* the academy

It’s a very dark reflection on the state of Australian politics that Labor (including Albanese) seem more satisfied with defeating Bandt than Dutton.

Progressive voters are tricking themselves into thinking this election was a great result, but Australia’s centre of gravity keeps going right.

social media bans, anti-protest measures, and even a "social cohesion pledge" (what does this even mean? government funding already comes with terms and conditions, no?). what a year for democracy ☠️☠️☠️

1 year ago 2 1 0 0

Social cohesion refers to trust, belonging and our willingness to help each other. Requiring pledges to social cohesion from some but not all organisations in receipt of public funding is a really great way to erode social cohesion. 🤦🏽‍♀️

I should be allowed to keep myself safe from COVID and other pathogens while enacting my human right to peacefully protest.

Does this now mean I can't attend any @nteuvictoria.bsky.social protests next year?

after six months of participation observation, I can't stop myself saving more papers than I'll ever be able to read + doing follow-up interviews, in case I need clearer quotes to prove my thesis isn't just based on Vibes

The question these days: will I finish my dissertation before it finishes me?

"ATAR doesn't really mean anything", people insist, as they send news crews into teenagers' homes to film them reacting to their ATARs

Australia’s $50,000 arts degree is here – putting university fees on par with the UK and US The Hecs/Help scheme was not designed so people making a regular wage remained in debt until death, expert says

As today is ATAR day in Australia, I'd just like to point out that the Aus govt punishes people who want to study humanities with forever-debt:

on top of concerns about the integrity of the content that LLMs churns out, I'm just uncomfortable with the use of LLMs full stop! even if we can use gen AI strategically, without compromising on work quality... I don't know how to feel about the bigger social and environmental consequences

would love to hear updates as it progresses! I'm interested in what AI means for epistemic injustice, when it uses knowledge that has already become public domain. current legal frameworks around IP don't really cut it

I'm simply uninterested in class reductionist rejections of intersectionality. You cannot have a unified working class without recognizing that different marginalized and racialized groups have distinct needs that must be respected. Arguing otherwise isn't class consciousness, it's white supremacy.

hey #academicsky #phdsky, (how) are we using gen AI to support research? ... and how are we grappling with the ethics of it?

I keep being told I'm working hard but not smart ... but I don't know if I'm comfy with the impacts of gen AI. would love recs of things to read and ponder over!

Ok, my hypothesis is that the Marx dudes who think it's only about class, and talking about race and intersectional oppression is "just identity politics" fail to recognize the racialized role of *servitude* as distinct from general exploitation in the history and present of capitalism

I read this and I think about how people have tried to tell me that asian representation has thrived in the food scene, so racism isn't much of a problem anymore ....... 🙃

Two stages of writing:

1) This shouldn't take too long
2) Oh no

South Korea Is Fighting for Democracy Again—And the World Needs to Know Last updated December 3, 10:09 AM South Korea Is Fighting for Democracy Again—And the World Needs to Know Heesoo Jang Assistant Professor of Media Law and Ethics Journalism Department, University of...

I was preparing to pitch an op-ed on the nationwide protests calling for President Yoon's resignation, aiming to provide global context amid the limited international coverage.

Given the urgency, I’m sharing it now. I didn’t expect events to escalate this quickly. #SouthKorea #Democracy

Writers: yes, you are still a "real" writer if you
- have never published anything
- have no readers
- didn't write anything this month
- didn't write anything this year
- can't articulate words anymore
- can only float and mournfully wail
- were murdered ten years ago on this very spot
