The Space of Being the Bad Object by Sarah Blake My monster fits in my pocket, but when we’re relaxing in the evening, watching TV, he sleeps on my chest. I like police procedurals where they catch murderers. (I like the American ones especially.…

I have a new (very) short story out at Lost Balloon! It’s about a monster who lives in a woman’s pocket and quotes Alexander Pope to her. My son informed me that I’ve written a Pokémon story—I never realized Pokémon was for pocket-monster!

Cinderella's Stepsister Speaks of Love

In the night, in whispers, my mother told me that love was not always the most important thing.
But when I was young, I didn't believe her.

I was angry all the time. It was like waking too early from a nap and snapping at everyone.

My mother told me to gather my clothes and I turned to my new sister, younger and amiable, and said, "You do it."

But eventually the world showed itself in all its limitations.

When the opportunity presented itself-the sharp knife and the shoe and the chance at the unrelenting freedom that wealth could grant—I looked at my foot

and it looked grotesque to me. The heel unnecessary. The smallest toe, too.
