And, even if immigrants didn't, they have as much right to be here as anyone classified as a "citizen."
This is the whole point: end the distinction nation-states make between "immigrants" and "citizens," and we will end the absolute horror that comes with restricting freedom of movement.

Hi, Rebecca. Please add me as well. Thanks.
Advocates of higher ed did heroic work rallying against this monstrous bill, but its passage was probably preordained. It's custom-made for today's Republican Party. It centralizes power in the executive; undermines education and critical thinking; censors speech; and attacks imaginary wokeness.

$200k from Mellon to each of the humanities councils that lost funding from NEH (which is mandated funding in the NEH legislation). It's one time and won't fill the budget hole, but v good to see.
"Visit the Early Republic Tracker" "Keep History Accessible!" The Early Republic Tracker is now live! The #JERPano is launching a public initiative to document efforts to erase or distort historical interpretation at national sites, museums, websites, and other public venues. We invite academic historians, public historians, federal workers, teachers, and concerned citizens to submit evidence of changes to the Early American historical record on the Panorama. The Tracker serves as a record and tool for historical accountability. We will respect requests for anonymity. Please help us ensure these changes do not disappear down the memory hole by visiting and contributing to the site

Cover design depicts an artist's rendering of a multi-colored blue wave overlaid with a geometric pattern and the words "Canal Dreamers: The Epic Quest to Connect the Atlantic and Pacific in the Age of Revolutions" as well as the author's name "Jessica Lepler."
Want to drift into the currents of the past? The cover for "Canal Dreamers" will pull you in! Love this watery confection by @uncpress.bsky.social. I'm so excited for the book's release later this year. 🗃️🌊🌎📘
I’d rather dive in. Congrats, Jess! I can’t wait to read it.
If you let the executive deport people to a foreign gulag just by pronouncing the word “terrorism,” then expect to be called a “terrorist” soon yourself.
Huzzah!
2) We need to be very careful that they do not extend their obedience from admin. offices to curriculum/research in ways that threaten academic freedom. #academicfreedom

I work on the history of citizenship and expatriation.

For historical background, this might interesting...

A fantastic, must-read article!
The history of expatriation in the early US is relevant in other ways as well, specifically as it relates to border crossing. The right to expatriation often included the belief that crossing borders entitled people to citizenship in the nation of their choice.
Does the administration know that there are research universities in red states?
Leave it to Bourdieu
Recently, UNC Press authors have had their US visas revoked and talks canceled.

Listened, now I gotta read this one: Quitting the Nation:

I don't think that there has been any press coverage of the matter yet, but a recent lawsuit in Texas History has huge implications for academic freedom, free speech more broadly, and disciplinary associations. /1

Thank you, Anna!
I’m still learning the lay of the land over here. I’d like to be a part of this if that’s still possible. Thanks!
