Hi Neill, I have a photograph for you! Thank you for a great session. My son is a huge Mega Robo Bros fan and was delighted to read the final instalment on the long drive home.
The pupils were working so industriously, crafting impressive academic essays that they cared about. It was inspirational to see.
For an historical event for which words fall short, the deadpan prose of Valdek and the simple mouse drawings of his son, Artie, make Maus an essential read. 3/3
The incredible story of the father’s survival is set against his son’s opinion of the man he became. The inter-generational impact of the holocaust is a major theme of the book. As is the difficulty of writing a history of the holocaust (the fate of his mother’s diaries is a major subplot). 2/3
Today I finished reading The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman (Vol 1 1986, Vol 2 1992). This is a holocaust memoir written by the son (Artie) of an Auschwitz survivor (Valdek). It is a graphic novel where Jews are depicted as mice, Nazis as cats, and Poles as pigs. 1/3
