Conversion practices aren't one discrete act. Instead, they're a series or ongoing pattern of multiple abusive behaviours that don't always look like 'therapy'. This can include being prayed over, being shamed in front of others, being beaten, being made to ingest something, being locked up, being denied food and/or water, or being assaulted.

Conversion practices are methods of abuse that have a pre-determined aim to ‘change', ‘cure' or suppress someone's sexual orientation and/or gender identity. At Galop, we often talk about “conversion practices" or “so-called ‘conversion therapy’" because these practices are never ‘therapy’ - they're abuse.

No one should try to 'change', 'cure', or suppress someone because of who they are.

Remember, there's nothing wrong with being LGBT+. We don't need to be 'cured' or 'fixed'.

The BBC’s claims on MVDAC-DVILR misuse don't reflect frontline reality. We see victims facing disbelief, delays and barriers to safety. Misuse is the exception, not the norm. We reject this framing & call for evidence-led debate rooted in lived experience.

We’re campaigning to #BanConversionPractices. Will you stand with us?

The Government has repeatedly promised to publish a draft Bill to ban harmful conversion practices by the end of this parliamentary session – that's fast approaching.

We’re campaigning to make sure they deliver, and we need you!

Bold text on a dark blue background explaining that sexual violence can happen within LGBT+ relationships.

Sexual violence can and does happen within LGBT+ relationships and communities. And it's important to shatter the myth that it doesn't.

LGBT+ people are often excluded from public narratives about sexual violence, but sexual violence can affect anyone, from any background and any identity.

It can be hard for people who have experienced abuse and violence to feel safe coming forward for help. When you're LGBT+, there's often an added worry that services won't understand your LGBT+ identity or that you'll experience anti-LGBT+ prejudice.

Threatening to ‘out’ your romantic or sexual orientation, gender identity, gender history, or HIV status without your consent. Pressuring you to keep your identity or relationship secret. Isolating you from family, friends, and the LGBT+ community. Denying that LGBT+ people can experience domestic abuse in intimate relationships. Using your hormones or gender-affirming medication as a method of control. Manipulating you into believing that no help is available because you're LGBT+, or that, for this reason, you deserve the abuse. These are just a few examples, and not a full list.

Domestic abuse can affect anyone from any background and any identity. Some forms of domestic abuse are specific to LGBT+ relationships, and these may be harder to spot because we don't see them represented as often in the media.

Here are some tips to recognise what these behaviours can look like ➡️
