Guttman portrayed the leader of the hedonistic Sikarians encountered by Voyager in the Delta Quadrant, however executive producer Michael Piller was disappointed with the species portrayal in the finished episode: "The pleasure planet people, the Sikarians, could have been very interesting, but they somehow just didn't turn out that way... The idea of a race and a species that's driven by pleasure as a motivating force is a fascinating thing to look at."

Makeup Supervisor Michael Westmore design a facial tattoo for Chakotay. In keeping with the writers' desire to avoid giving the character a specific tribal affiliation, the make was deliberately designed not to represent any particular tribal culture. In an interview with The Washington Times, Beltran joked that he was asked to wear Chakotay's facial tattoo for while performing Hamlet in Albuquerque, New Mexico following the end of VOYAGER's first season.
