"Humans won't work unless they're forced to" is a myth for stupid people. If you're paying attention, humanity loves to do the job... they just don't like to be exploited and abused just to survive, the 2 tools people THINK you need to inflict upon humans to make them work.

if the conditions aren't materially better in some way - pay or quality of life or rights, then people will just hit da bricks for double the money. like what feels like the majority of my graduating class!

Surelock I hate deadlocks. Maybe you do too.

πŸ¦€πŸ”β˜ οΈ Tired of deadlocks? Me too! Here's a post about a library that I've been working on to help wrangle the problem in Rust

yeah so the entire root span concept was kind of one of the cardinal sins of the otel standard with respect to these use cases. @hazelweakly.me has an interesting piece somewhere about non -request driven systems which boils down to "rotate root spans every few seconds"

2 weeks ago 2 0 1 0

ah this use case. lol. we're probably going to do this in lix by very verbose traces with perfetto.dev, not otel. imo otel isn't very good at this.

well, the thing is that mostly traces are things to be examined by humans so having 10k spans in them is wasteful of event budget+unhelpful. queries work better with wide events. what you want to do is be able to directly hone into the interesting requests and that is best achieved with wide events.

I don't know how to say it emphatically enough, but _so many_ of the obstacles people face are exacerbated by them backing away from what they perceive their opponents (bosses, political adversaries, etc.) to be, instead of accurately assessing what really lies in front of them.

one of the things that I've learned recently is that often spans below the main one are somewhat counterproductive because they create a lot of noise and are frequently less useful than one might hope. it's most helpful to do stuff like adding more attrs to the main span (wide events idea).
